Presenter recommendations for process art and sensory play

  • 1.  Presenter recommendations for process art and sensory play

    Posted 20 days ago

    Hello!

I'm looking at staff development for the coming year in process art and sensory play. Does anyone have great recommendations?

I am in Fort Worth, TX.

I love my staff, but we need a refresher in process art -- the crafts and coloring sheets are about to send me over the edge!

    Thank you,

    Dear Nins,

I recommend Wunderled or Sally Haughey it used to be Fairy Dust.  Sally has a FBA and early Childhood Teacher so is a great resource.  I think open ended art is something that if shown great ideas or like Sally has done in past why may help.   Hope my suggestion helps.

    Hi Nina:

It seems like several people have pointed you in the direction of relevant resources and I hope one pans out for you.  Perhaps after that PD takes place, you can work with your team of teachers to create some type of policy around process vs product oriented art.  Your concern is one that I hear fairly often from program administrators.  Since policy guides practice, perhaps the fact that your staff keep leaning in the product direction means they need some messaging around the program's expectations.  I'd be curious to know if anyone on Hello has relevant policies to share.

Thank you, Kristen. I think you're right. I've stated that a couple crafts are okay (i.e. holidays, keepsakes) but need to make clear that they are the rare exception. I would love to hear anyone's policies on this!

    Hello!

We have an amazing teacher training for using music to foster cognitive development with 0-6 year olds. It's a little different, but it's still arts based. It's completely online as well. If you're interested, you can email me at leah.waldo@rcmusic.ca!

Thank you, Leah! Maybe next year. That's important too, but I feel like we're in better shape with music.

    Hi Nina!

I could help! :)  We team with childcare centers in Pittsburgh where we offer art and music in over 50 centers. Would you like me to connect you with our art facilitator for a virtual inservice? She is currently in the process of receiving her masters in Art Therapy and she is AMAZING! This would be great experience for her as well, so we would work with your budget.

Thank you for valuing the importance of the creative arts within your center.

I agree, Lisa Murphy, is a must see. I've seen her several times, The first time was the best. She has a variety of presentations so matching her content to the audience may prevent a re-run for attendees. You might have sticker shock with the speaker fee if your organization has a tight budget but we in EC are used to tight budgets. Her talent and message are unique and impactful which brings enthusiasm to the event.

    Hi Martha,

The sticker shock is what prompted me to post here! I tried to get several local preschools to share the costs, but we couldn't figure out a day and even splitting the cost, it was too much. But I hope I can find a time to pool our resources and have Lisa in the future. Thank you for the suggesting and for understanding!

    In regards to Lisa Murphey:

I purchased a video off of her site a couple years ago called "Creative Art with Young Children" it is about the process not product. It gives a test and handout, certification document. I used it in a learning session with my staff and at the end had all kinds of things for them to make a process art project. Check www.ooeygooey.com

Hi Nina. As a seasoned early childhood art educator with over three decades of experience, I have facilitated numerous professional development opportunities for early childhood educators both nationally and internationally. Drawing inspiration from the Reggio Emilia approach, I incorporate authentic art materials in my teaching, offering open-ended art experiences that encourage sensory exploration and play. Through art activities, I aim to foster early childhood literacy, language development, and brain growth. By engaging children (in my art studio) in hands-on, self-directed learning through art, I help them develop crucial cognitive, social, emotional, and multi-sensory skills. In my teacher workshops, I present the latest evidence-based research on the neuroscience of art-making and its positive effects on early brain development and language acquisition. Educators who attend my sessions gain insight into both theoretical concepts and practical strategies for delivering high-quality art experiences using authentic materials.

My fees are very modest because I realize early childhood educators have limited financial resources. It is more important to me that I get the message out about providing quality open-ended art experiences for little children.  I do both in-person and online sessions. I would like to share that I recommend to a center Coach to start a book club with staff, focusing on the NAEYC Nurturing Creativity (text). It's packed with excellent information and prompts for reflection. It has enriches the staffs understanding and practices in fostering creativity together. I am also utilizing this as a text for my college course.
