Need for group instructors

  • 1.  Need for group instructors

    Hi everyone,

I am having the worst time attempting to find someone to teach a Child Abuse Awareness course to my staff.  I want them to know this information because they are mandated reporters and need to be aware of what that fully entails.

    I welcome any suggestions.

Hello, I found Universal classes, online course, for Child Abuse Awareness. It is a course offered. Your staff can take it together but call the company and find out more if possible. This comprehensive course studies the typical profiles of child abusers, reviews the various forms and aspects of neglect and abuse, discusses how to recognize the signs of abuse, and summarizes the steps to take to document, report, and end the abuse.

    Hope this helps.

You can find several trainings for child abuse awareness on OCCRA. (Ohio Child Care Resource and Referral Agency)

Thank you, and I have instructed them to take the training from OCCRRA.  We did train on Mandated Reporter, but the state requires that providers have an initial 6 hour training and I am making that requirement for my staff also.  I want them to know everything the providers are required to know.  The referral agency here in Cuyahoga does not offer it for the 6 hours, but in Dayton and Cincy, theirs do.  I am very jealous!  We took the 1 hour training but it was so sketchy and did not talk about a lot of the types or forms of abuse that we see occurring with the kids.

Thank you so much for your input!

As of 10/13/2021, the Ohio child care rules no longer specify a 6-hour time frame. Rule 5101:2-12-10 Appendix lists the requirements of what topics should be covered, but no time frame.

The Resource and Referral agencies across Ohio conduct the full course, and if it is on the OPR's training search, then it meets the requirements.

    The rule states:

All child care staff members are to be currently trained in child abuse and neglect recognition and prevention.

Child abuse and neglect recognition and prevention training is to be completed within the first sixty days of hire.

(b)Until all required individuals are current in the trainings, at a minimum, the center is to have at least one trained child care staff member on-site (in each building) during all hours of operation who meets this requirement.

I was just going to say this same thing. I am a contracted trainer for my local child care and resource agency and I know they either offer the course, know how providers can get the course, or partner with another agency to get the course out there.

ODJFS has a free one hour child abuse awareness class that all childcare employees are required to take. You can find it in the OCCRRA website also. If you are wanting in person training try AIR. Their trainers travel (in Ohio), but I'm not sure how far they go.

Different states call them different things but I might suggest reaching out your county/local Child and Family Services or Child Protective Services division in your State's Human Services office.  Another option would be to reach out to a local university that has a social work program.   Another option could be a county extension services office that includes family and child development (not just agriculture).

Thank you for that.  I did reach out to our other agencies (I work there) and they had nothing to offer, but I love the idea to contact the schools, we have several in this area.  I will do that one.

Kind of along these same lines, here in New Mexico, we have a doctor (pediatrician) who is the state's 'go-to'. She sits on the Child Death Review Board, she testifies as a subject matter expert, etcetera. She was thrilled when I asked her to train my staff on this same topic. I wonder if your state has someone like that.

Here is a link for Vermont's required training... it is online but all licensed program staff need to complete it...

    Maybe it is a start...

Hello! Here in NC, our teachers have to take a child maltreatment and neglect course online through Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina.  In the past, we've also had someone from DSS come out and talk about being a mandated report and what the process entails when someone reports suspected abuse or neglect.
