    Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum so I apologize if this is something that has been previously brought up.

I have been asked to lead a study group for our center and am looking for articles or specific chapters from books that will support teachers in deepening their understanding of the importance of Oral Language development (with 3 & 4-year olds) and it's relationship to Early Literacy.  I would appreciate you sharing titles to any resources that you have found particularly useful.

    Thank you,

    Patricia

I use this article a lot: The Role of Early Oral Language in Literacy Development by Shanahan and Lonigan in Language Magazine

and here is David Dickinson talking about his research with Michelle Porche: Robust Link Between Preschool, Language, and Literacy

So Much More than the ABCs by Judith Schickedanz and Molly Collins is a great resource.

Great idea! This research from MIT is quite powerful:  Back-and-forth exchanges boost children's brain response to language

And here are three blog posts on our website that I think could be helpful to a teacher trying to increase the use of language in a classroom.

    1. Storybooks: Sharing Culture and Increasing Vocabulary:  How shared reading of stories from books can help children identify common themes and make associations to cultural experiences. These associations help form relevant connections, which can deepen an understanding of previously unfamiliar words.
    2. Simple Ways to Promote Speech and Language DevelopmentA language-rich environment isn’t just a room with books and a variety of print; it’s a room where children hear and participate in talking, singing, and reading. Quick tips to incorporate more language.
    3. Encouraging Early Education Success in Dual Language Learners

"Read Right from the Start" is a program of classes that are free online that address language and literacy from birth to preschool. I have taken all the classes and it help so much to develop my skills in helping children gain in language and literacy. They are self-paced and very easy to follow. So glad I took them.
