The CDC no longer recommends "no nit" policies for schools. Would you be willing to share your policy?

I am part of a T-8 grade school and my director wants to have the same policy for the whole student body - which has no element of exclusion at any time , just a requirement that the child is being treated at home.

I am wondering how other programs with young children approach this issue.

    thanks for the help.

    Hello Danielle

This is a tough one because the information by CDC says "recommends". At our preschool we have the  no nit policy to minimize exposures.

Hopefully you will get other feedback on this topics..

"No nit" policies require that children are excluded from school as long as there are any nit (the eggs lice leave behind, stuck to a hair shaft) present in their hair. Often times, teachers and/or administrators with screen their heads (and everyone else's) to verify the presence or lack there of - of nits.

This can result in children being excluded from school - in some cases - up to two + weeks of school.

Thank you. Fortunately our center is free of this issue.
    Again, thank you

    Danielle

That is correct. But I have to say the "no nits" policy or having that information in our policy we have not had any big issues. And we don't get very many children with lice.

    Danielle,
Our program uses an excellent resource entitled "Managing Infectious Diseases in Child Care and Schools" put out by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The sixth edition was just published. It reviews most of the illnesses we face working with children, provides signs/symptoms. photos, information about contagion, roles of educator and family along with exclusion and readmission information. The comment sections provide CDC information.  If you don't have it, I would strongly suggest you get a copy for your school.
In this guide, it is suggested families check in with their health professional to discuss treatment and if it recommended, they should be allowed to return after the treatment. They also suggest no head to head contact until no new lice and no new nits within 1/4" of scalp for anyone in the group.  "No nit policies are not recommended because they have not been shown to be effective in controlling outbreaks, may keep the child out of the program needlessly, and unduly burden the child's parents/guardians, who must implement this measure."
This is such a hard place to be as many families are dependent on work to survive and exclusion for nits can be endless...  One way to look at it is how can we as the educator, make changes to help families through the process.
