Hello, I've been in the ECE field for quite awhile as a twos and threes teacher. I'm working on my bachelor degree but not sure what I will want to do with it. I don't want to teach in a few years as I am getting older. What are some other areas besides Director or classroom i can consider?

    Hi Stacey,

My career path lead from the classroom (toddlers and then kindergarten) to the director's office to community-based ECE training and support organizations. Currently I work in Pennsylvania's QRIS and many of my colleagues and regional partners share a similar journey. National organizations like BUILD, Zero to Three, and NAEYC might also be an avenue for your next professional adventure.

Working with an older age group might be a way to be in the classroom but have a new experience.
    Afterschool programing or camp director
    Early interventionist
    Home visitor
    ECE mentor
    Instructor or trainer
    Child care referral agency work
    Policy and advocacy work
Informal care such as being a nanny for one family
    Non-recurring care
    Paraeducator or substitute
    WIC staff position
Work within a related field but bring your wealth of knowledge of DAP to serve in an "assistant role" for specialist. Many specialists would benefit from having someone  who understands how to support children. This might include assisting mental health therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, behavioral specialists, intensive family based service providers, pediatricians, dental professionals, and list goes on.

Best of luck, Stacey! I would encourage you to reach out to your college's Career Services and have them help you craft a dynamic resume and help you with interviewing skills. Many organizations are in dire need of adults that bring skills and experience with them to the workforce.

If you are dynamic, fun, open minded and have effective knowledge to share with early childhood educators and want to be seen,  consider an adventure into being an early childhood keynote speaker. Start presenting at local and national conferences and building a speaking career. If that resonates with you,  find mentors that are already successful to guide you. I have a few and would love to coach you.

    Hi Stacey,

You might want to check out this document put out by one of our largest Child Care Resource & Referral agencies in our state a few years ago.
    https://www.childcareservices.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/NC-ECE-Career-Directory_051419.pdf

Some of the information is specific to North Carolina... but I thought the part with the career descriptions and/or the references, might give you some ideas of the many diverse career paths available to individuals with Early Childhood related degrees and experience, who may be looking for something other than working directly in a classroom.

Your professional knowledge and classroom experience to-date are very valuable and there are a variety of opportunities for which you may be qualified and enjoy.

Best of luck in finding and making your next career move within the broader ECE field!

    Wishing you well,
    Debbi

Hello, this is perfect as my husband and I will be moving to Nc for our permanent home in a couple of years. Could you tell me if NC accepts degrees from Walden University?

What a coincidence that your future plans include NC!

As far as I know, degrees from Walden University are accepted. They certainly would be where I work & in most of the organizations and child care facilities with which I am familiar.
...Although you could reach out to our NC Division of Child Development and Early Education (DCDEE) to confirm.

DCDEE has a very comprehensive website. https://ncchildcare.ncdhhs.gov/ that you may want to browse for that and other information.

    NC also has:
    • a statewide Early Childhood initiative called Smart Start... 75 local 501c3 nonprofits covering all 100 counties + the State Partnership (NCPC)  https://www.smartstart.org/,
    • numerous local & regional Child Care Resource & Referral agencies,
    • a statewide Pre-Kindergarten program called NC Pre-K (details can be found thru the Search on the DCDEE website),
    • many Head Start / Early Head Start grantees / programs across the state,
    • an active NAEYC state affiliate https://ncaeyc.org/
    • great early childhood advocacy organizations https://ncchild.org/  https://ncearlyeducationcoalition.org/ https://buildthefoundation.org/,
    • Community College and University ECE higher ed programs and departments, and
    • lots of other ECE related programs and services, too numerous to list!
So many opportunities to be of service to and on behalf of young children and families!!
