    Hi everyone!
I would like to get some feedback on a situation that we seem to be having where I work. 3 years ago, the public school system asked if I would like to be a part of their preschool collaboration team, which consists of 3 other preschools under the supervision of the school district. I gladly said I would be delighted as I felt this would strengthen the tioes with our programs. The majority of the students I have yearly will attend this district anyway so it makes the bonds between our program and the others more streamlined and unfied. My issue is the professional development that the district chooses for the preschool programs. I havaen't been able to be a part of this in the past as it has always had to do with the district.
Last year the preschool staff had to do a series of profesional development called Intentional Teacher. The majority of this PD did in NO way pertain to preschool but the staff was required to participate anyway. I feel that the PD for preschool staff should pertain to preschool. The staff sat through hours of training that didn't apply to their programs at all. I am willing to do PD with them as part of collaboration but not if it doesn't relate to preschool. We are trying to find a PD that would be appropriate for preschool but are having a hard time getting the administration to understand the 'why' of finding appropriate PD for staff. We have thought about the Science of Reading , Unpacking the Pyramid model, and some other possible topics for PD.
I would like to get some feedback on whether I am looking at this correctly. Any thoughts or suggestions would be extremely appreciated. I am just thinking that if it was prschool related PD, it would be more beneficial for all of us in collaboration.

    Hi Sue

Here on the island of Guam (US territory), we are required to submit to our director 45 contact hours (or college credit equivalent) of early childhood related courses or training.  We do this either in house, offerings by our community college/university, or online with Texas AMU or edWeb.  The courses we take is scrutinized by our licensing division and then approved by
the Guam Learning Council before we submit to the licensing division head.
Texas AMU offers free and paid courses in early childhood.  EdWeb offers a wide variety of courses.  You just have to browse through their website.
    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Maureen Lujan

    Hey Sue,

That must be so frustrating to be stuck in the middle of the district wants and finding PD relevant to your preschool teachers.

Bertelsen Education offers self paced as well as group courses which you can facilitate. All of our courses are internationally accredited and count for CEUs.

Here is a link to our course list:

We are also on the Iowa registry for professional development for childcare providers.

Let me know if I can provide you with any more information! :)

    Hi Sue,
I believe your school district has to provide trainings to meet teacher certification and must be associated with CEU's or college credit and aligned in this manner. In Pennsylvania where I am, we gain ACT48 credits to keep our teacher cert active. Some of our preschool teachers who also have teacher certifications are always looking for ACT48 trainings if they are not a part of the school district. Others choose to take PD directly related to birth-grade 3 which may not be ACT48. Some higher ed's do offer PD trainings that are associated with CEU's and ACT48 but they are few and far between. Here is information for PA on the DOE website, but you would need to check with your state's guidelines in IA.

    Hope this helps some.

The book and training, ie. The Intentional Teacher, is based on NAECY standards and absolutely pertains to teaching children in preschools. It could be that the training just happened to have the same name, but I have used this book in my ECE courses at the college I teach at and students love it. Perhaps something was lost in translation because the person who taught the course unfortunately didn't scaffold it correctly to what happens every day between a teacher and young learners?

Please note a correction to my earlier question post -
It WASN'T " Intentional Teacher" training but "Explicit Instruction" training. Sorry for the confusion - I know Intentional Teacher is for prrechool.
