I have a bin of rubber ducks that are numbered 1-20, by the bin I have a class list numbered alphabetically. When it's time to line up I choose a duck and the child whose number is picked is the line leader.

Every child has a daily job, which is posted on our job chart. One of the jobs is line leader, and we rotate jobs every day, so every child gets a chance to be line leader over the course of a couple of weeks.

I have a helper jar with craft sticks with the students names written on them. Because we have class five days a week but not even comes all five days, I couldn't assign weekly chores. As needed, I draw a name to do a job- flag holder, fish feeder, morning and afternoon line leader, and anything that comes up where I want a random choice. We never get stuck needing an alternate, and the students get a little more practice reading their classmates names.

For the past few years, I haven't had line leaders at all!  I found it actually decreased stress and conflict in my classroom, which surprised me because I thought it would have the opposite effect.  That being said, I'd return to the practice if I had a group that seemed to need it.

I use popsicle sticks, like Laura does. But it's for Child of the Day. Child of the Day leads the line, runs the errands, helps with the opening routines, chooses the closing read aloud, all those good things. Next morning, yesterday's Child of the Day chooses the stick to select the new Child of the Day. I set aside students' popsicle sticks as they're chosen so everyone gets one turn before anyone gets another turn.

I divide my class into 3 color teams (Red Team/4, Yellow Team/5 and Blue Team/4) and every week it's a different team's week. Within the week each person gets to be star of the day and with that comes special tasks, ie. line leader, lights, flag holder, math story teller during circle/calendar time and show and tell.

I have a list and rotate through that. They seem to really enjoy it.

As others here have said, we have a job board that gives each child a helper job in the classroom. We rotate names on the board weekly.

I have always used job charts but it became more purposeful after exploring Conscious Discipline. From Shubert's Classroom on their website is a description of how powerful jobs can be as well as how to get started. https://consciousdiscipline.com/free-resources

Every child in a Conscious Discipline classroom has a job. These jobs provide children an opportunity to build self-worth and responsibility by contributing to the School Family in meaningful ways. The School Family Job Board provides a management system for your class jobs.

Create a list of the classroom routines, rituals and duties you conduct every day in class. From this list, select the jobs that are most important and can be done by your students. You will have one job for every student.

Display your jobs in such a way that every child can visually see his or her job and read the job title.

We have a classroom job chart that we use.  I rotate weekly!  Each student has a job, and they keep that job for the whole week, and then we switch on Monday's.  Line leader is one of my jobs on the job chart.  I've also seen teachers use popsicle sticks with kids names on them, draw one, and then flip it upside down after they have had a turn, so that way you're not picking the same ones over and over again!

I also use a Job Pocket Char with a picture for each job and each child has his/her picture on popsicle stick to choose a job every Monday.  I have a line leader and line ender and tell them that a line leader and a line ender is has an important job. because they both help to keep the cabooses of the train together.  The child on the back help the teacher to fix the train.

I typically avoid using lines and line leaders and just let the children gather at the door. I do realize this is not realistic in some settings. When I was a student some 30 years ago, lines were considered developmentally inappropriate for preschool-age children. Just something to think about.

We have a classroom job chart that we use and line leader is one of the jobs on it . Every day each student chooses what job they will like to do by placing their pictures on it and it works really well for us.
