As the others have already said, integrated activities are from different content areas around a particular topic. I remember as a kindergarten teacher in a school system the lesson plan was to be reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. My classroom schedule was whole group time,, self selected activities time, outdoor time, story time, and lunch time. When I made my lesson plans, we might be learning about caterpillars and butterflies. I might have started with a story about caterpillars. I would ask the class about anything new they saw in the room (the caterpillars I had brought in that were now in the science area). I might have asked the class what they thought about caterpillars, how big they were, what did they eat, etc We might have sung a song about counting, When I wrote the lesson plan the story went under literacy, the song under math. The discussion about caterpillars went under science. .I never looked at the lesson plan again in the week. I looked at my schedule and the sequence of activities. It was a creative way of doing the required lesson plan, but following a developmentally appropriate format for kindergarten children.

I believe integrating concepts is helping the child understand the well-rounded aspect of learning. Using eggs for example, allowing 3 years olds to play with plastic eggs creates a whole new world in literacy, math, engineering, and fine motor skills. They learn the shape, the size they learn about pushing and pulling. When they try and open them they are learning pincer grasp and as they stack them they are learning engineering skills. Allowing all or most areas to be reached in one activity creates those aha moments and sparks new interests and ideas.
