Age-Appropriate Assessments for 3-year-olds

I am researching assessment tools that will demonstrate growth in math and literacy skills for our 3 year olds. We have tried using the CPALLS assessment but since it is applicable to children 3.5 and older it really isn't meeting our needs. Are there any other assessments currently in use that can be used to measure the cognitive development of 3 year olds specifically over the course of a year?

    Hi,
I found Teaching Strategies Gold Online system very useful. Because it starts from birth and goes up to 3rd grade you can rate children on a full spectrum of development despite their age. They also have a complete rubric which accompanies the system with examples of what each stage looks like. If you choose the online system many types of reports can be accessed as well including individual development as well as classroom. Best of all it is based on Authentic Assessments: photo's work samples, observations, checklists, etc. I also liked the Work Sampling System for similar reasons. We started with the Early Screening Inventory as a screening tool.

I have also been using Teaching Strategies GOLD, but one of the agencies we work with uses COR, which aligns with High Scope. Does your center have a set curriculum that you use with the children?

The Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) is also an authentic assessment that provides a full developmental assessment for infants through school age children. It is the state assessment for California and is the basis for the kindergarten KIDS state required assessment in Illinois.  We have used COR in the past, but are moving to DRDP this year. It is less expensive and more user and family friendly than COR.

    Hello Everyone!

I use as a guide to my progress reports the New Jersey Preschool Standards for Early Childhood Education which has everything from Language Arts -  Cognitive Developmental Growth. Excellent tool to have to give you a scope in what children should be learning for further educational growth. One other item that I use as well is the WIDA  learning outcomes for ELL  since I teach at a French American Academy where some children are not yet proficient in the English Language.
