Is anyone using eBooks or digital stories in their early childhood classrooms?  Are there any you would recommend and how are you using these to enhance instruction in your learning environment?

    Hi Kelly,
I'm really interested in hearing examples as well. In the meantime I thought you might find this Young Children article on e-books interesting: Getting Smarter about E-books for Children.  It contains examples as well as a discussion of the research.

Susan,  Thank you so much for this article on eBooks for children.  We are just starting to digitize our curriculum for young children and this was VERY helpful in our planning.  We definitely will take this advice to heart.

    I love to use storylineonline.net, tumblebooklibrary.com and getepic.com.
All have high quality stories, clear, expressive storytellers and excellent quality illustrations.
Each website displays the actual text along with the illustrations!  Showing the text, allows the children to make a clear connection to a book.
Storylineonline.net has famous readers from the Screen Actors Guild.   They begin each story introducing the storyteller holding the REAL book!  Both tumblebooklibrary.com and getepic.com also show both text and illustrations.
After watching a digital story, I share a physical copy of the book with my class.  I make it accessible to them so they too can be storytellers.
I read 3-4 books to my students each day.  I believe in fostering the love of reading.  The digital books are another way to help my students develop a love of literature!

I would like to add to my post that I show the digital stories with a projector on a large screen.  We watch them as a class.  Each child shares something he/she loved or learned at the conclusion of the story.  I show a physical copy of the book.  Many times, the children want me to read the story to them after watching the digital version!

Using new technologies is great.  I just want to point out that if you're recommending to parents a certain amount of screen time for children, or limited screen time, any classroom screen time is included in each child's weekly or daily screen time amount.  And just like having a TV on in the background at home counts--having your smart board on or a computer running that children can see also counts.  Love the new tech ideas and they need to be used thoughtfully.

Aren- totally agree the new technologies need to be used thoughtfully and believe it is important to consider media diet and consider research, to understand issues such as the impact of background TV and that while some foods are healthier than other, this is also true of types of media-what type, how used and content are important. During an evening meeting with families, we discussed related ideas from this blog post http://www.fredrogerscenter.org/2013/02/helping-young-children-develop-a-healthy-media-diet/ which some families found thought provoking. We also share key ideas Faith Rogow mentions about the importance of helping children become literate in a digital world http://www.fredrogerscenter.org/2013/10/counting-screen-time-minutes-isnt-an-education-strategy/ so they can choose and use technology "as tools that help us explore the world and share ideas."

Think this connects to the ebook and digital story discussion. when Maria mentioned finding quality stories as key, be they print or digital (content) and their intentional use with the children (when and how they are used.) Research shows the importance of adult-child interaction (mentioned in the articles Susan and Katie shared) and that it is important to consider what kinds of features an ebook offers such as text highlighting, audio narration or the ability to record an additional audio track (in another language perhaps to increase access to learning). Hope others using ebooks and/or digital stories will share about their experiences and discoveries...

    Bonnie-
When I first asked students to share what they loved or learned after reading a story, I got 1 or 2 original responses and the rest of the class essentially copied by saying, "I liked what ( a friend's name) liked."  I began to emphasize how exciting it was to hear from the children who had the original responses.  I  praised their ideas and repeated their comments back to the class, often finding the exact page in the physical copy of the book.  This encouraged my little "copycats" to be creative in their responses and listen more attentively to the story!!  My class had developed exciting language and great listening skills!

Maria-Really enjoyed reading about your strategies to help children identify what they like about a story. Do you think being reflective/discussing a story after it is being read helps the children consider what makes a good story? Or if this kind of conversation, thinking about what makes a good story, impacts their own story creation?

Maria-great to hear how you are supporting love of language and reading-the ways you are introducing the digital stories to the whole group and then the actual book. And asking each child to share his/her thoughts about what they liked about the story- does this help the children consider more carefully what makes a good story/types of stories that they like? Do they listen more carefully, as they consider what they will say?

Thanks to you and Juana for hosting this conversation and sharing ideas about digital storytelling with us. The timing was particularly poignant given the pandemic and issues parents now face in balancing working from home, home schooling children and being parents and partners. I was inspired by the stories and technologies that participants shared - one of the most robust back channels i can remember and so much support and affirmation for each other and for the young children, parents and families in our care.

    Hi Kelly,
We love using ebooks in our classroom! In fact, our dramatic play area just became a library space for our students to play in. They enjoy sorting books, previewing books, "checking" books out, and most recently we added a listening and viewing area. I created QR codes for age appropriate stories from storyline online, school tube, and our voice over class books and compiled them all into a binder where our students can use the iPad scan the code and be granted immediate access to these stories. Our students then listen to the story being read to them with a partner or on their own. This may be something you are interested in!

    Hello,

I am enjoying the discussion on using eBooks and thanks to everyone for sharing their ideas and experiences.  I have a question for the group:  Do you have suggestions on how to successfully introduce appropriate use of eBooks to teachers who are hesitant and skeptical?

    Hi Donna,

In workshops, I like to share stories of ways ebooks have increased access to learning for young children and families. I often start by showing a couple of screens from the ebook "Barnyard Dance" -asking for people to identify, as we look at the pages together, what kinds of features they notice that are unique to the digital version (word highlighting, visual supports for the action words, etc). If teachers haven't seen an ebook, think it helps to take a look and consider ways this story format can be useful, sometimes in addition to sharing the printed versions of the same story.

Then I tell the story of how a family child care provider who loves books introduced the Barnyard Dance ebook to the children in her mixed age family child care home, allowing for additional story readings independently by the children, after they knew how to use it/when the caregiver was busy (There are details about this story on the second page of the NAEYC TYC article  Touch and Grow: Learning and Exploring Using Tablets)

While several people have talked about using digital stories with children available online (always interested in finding free resources like those you have mentioned-so thanks for sharing), are any of you using ebooks on tablets with young children in your program?

Thank you to NAEYC's Tech and Young Children Interest Forum for the invitation to share my thinking and research about e-books and digital stories at your quarterly meeting. If you missed the meet up/discussion, you can download the presentation slides at https://www.academia.edu/35969608/E-BOOKS_AND_DIGITAL_STORIES_Webinar_for_NAEYCs_Tech_and_YC_IF.

I believe Lynn Hartle will be posting the video recording, for posterity, here shortly. If you have questions or want to continue the conversation please feel free to email me, kpaciga@gmail.com, or tweet me @kpaciga.

In my talk I'd indicated that there are some concise tips for sharing e-books during story time. I've copied them here: After reading, Roskos (2013) suggests teachers: (1) reinforce theme or informational content; (2) walk through text structure, using digital features to teach literacy concepts and skills; and (3) invite children to browse/read stories on a mobile device with a friend or alone (summarized from Roskos, K. (2013). The eBook goes to school: Shared book reading 3.0. In S.B. Neuman & L. Gambrel (Eds.), Quality reading instruction in the age of Common Core Standards (190-203). Newark, DE: International Reading Association.).
