Hello: New Interest Forum on Rural Issues

There are thousands of early childhood educators living in rural America who may feel isolated and somewhat frustrated. A new interest forum designed to give rural educators and decision makers living in rural states a voice and a presence within NAEYC and beyond has recently been approved. The first meeting will be held at the annual conference in Atlanta. The date, time and location will be determined at a later date, and will be listed in the pre-conference program.

We hope to add members and use this is as a platform to share solutions to some of the most difficult and overarching problems facing young children today who live in rural America.

If you have a topic of interest, please feel free to begin the conversation. As a point of departure for our first discussion, I would like to call attention to a new report, Why Rural Matters http://www.ruraledu.org/user_uploads/file/WRM-2015-16.pdf , by the Rural School and Community Trust as a good entry point. Building a case for specific support for children living in rural America will call for all individuals involved in their lives to be informed about a variety of issues relating to education, health, mental health and the impact poverty has on the development of the brain in a child's earliest years.

We look forward to hearing from many of you soon.

Thank you for bringing this important discussion to the forums.  I live and serve early childhood educators in a rural region.  They, and the families they <g class="gr_ gr_1328 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep" id="1328" data-gr-id="1328">serve,</g> have some amazing <g class="gr_ gr_1372 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="1372" data-gr-id="1372">strenghts</g> and also <g class="gr_ gr_1435 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="1435" data-gr-id="1435">hsome</g> unique needs.  I do think a major challenge is <g class="gr_ gr_1508 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="1508" data-gr-id="1508">isolation</g>.  They face obstacles related to professional development and access to resources that are uniquely rural.  I also think there are cultural issues embedded in the rural region that present amazing opportunities as well as some challenges for early childhood educators.  I look forward to participating in the forum and sharing ideas!
