  • 1.  Qualifications to be a teachers Aide

Hi everyone, I just recently graduated from college this year and I am looking for a job but I don't know quite what I want to do yet. I have heard that being a teacher's aide isn't so bad. I was a student teacher my last two semesters in college and I really enjoyed it, I want to work alongside the teacher and help him/her plan their lessons for their children, and help them in the classroom. Is there any certain type of certification that I need to be a teacher's aide?  I do have my associate's degree in early care and education as well as a certificate of proficiency in early care and education. I really need to start looking for a job since I graduated. I am nervous because I have never had a job before working with young children so any advice would be very helpful and appreciated.

Congratulations Cheryl. I suggest you contact the Director of an Early Childhood Education Center or Home in your area to find out the qualifications needed to be a teacher's aide. My initial hunch is you are probably qualified for this position. You might also want to contact your local school district to find out if they have teacher aide positions in their schools and the qualifications someone needs to apply for this position.

It sound like you have the education needed to work with young children. I found young children are responsive to teachers who clearly are passionate about their work with them and genuinely care about the children and are open to learn as they gain the experience to work with the children, their families and co-workers.

I wish you much success in finding a position that you believe is aligned with your career goals.

    Cheryl:
Congratulations!  Qualifications for teaching vary from state to state so it would be good for you to check with your state Department of Education.  And hopefully you can get a job where you'll learn from a mentor and there's a way for you to move up as you gain experience and professional development.  Best of luck.
