    Hi All

i have new teachers that use very directive speech with their students. Do this..., Do that..., Stop..., etc. all day long. Does anyone have a training they recommend how to talk to preschool children, open ended questions to ask, scaffolding, etc?

    Hi!
I'd recommend the book- possible as a book study- "Powerful Interactions: How to Connect with Children to Extend Their Learning" by Amy Laura Dombro, Judy Jablon, and Charlotte Stetson. It is a NAEYC published book (2011). It is a great framework for interacting with children Birth-Age 8 and beyond. There is also related website with video segments that illustrate the interaction framework of 1) Be Present; 2) Connect; and 3) Extend Learning.

The resources from other posts are also appropriate. From my experience, I recommend a series of staff development/trainings rather just one workshop, if you are needing implementation.

    Try using more inclusive language.

    more directive and calm

    " it time to clean..."

"I need your assistance in doing ..."

"okay everyone we are doing ..."

Try telling children what is requested from them and  if they are still  not responding use counting or singing.

allowing children to be included is a healthy way to redirect  without being agressive.

    I hope this helps .

There is a wealth of research that has shown how the relationship between the teacher and child is central to teacher effectiveness. You can do some reading and PD on that. I also recommend that the staff do some self-reflection on their social emotional modeling and how they are (or are not) modeling social interactions. See this SEL Self-assessment tool:   https://www.gtlcenter.org/sites/default/files/SelfAssessmentSEL.pdf, since social interactions are the first skill area addressed.

A focus on play or on SEL in general should wake teachers up to the problem with being too directive.

NAEYC has online modules on Developmental Appropriate practice (DAP) which I believe will talk about the importance of the relationship between the teacher and child. See https://www.naeyc.org/resources/pd/online-learning/focus-preschoolers

If your teachers are directing too much, they are not likely to know how to gently guide play, and important teaching skill that also requires a trusting relationship between teacher and student. See the webinar on this at https://www.naeyc.org/events/trainings-webinars/recorded-webinars (Enhancing Knowledge and Skill Development by Gently Guiding Play).

A recent article on the teacher's role would also require teachers to consider when to guide and when to direct: Observing, Planning, Guiding: How an Intentional Teacher Meets Standards through Play (see: https://www.naeyc.org/resources/pubs/yc/mar2018/observing-planning-guiding)

    I hope this is helpful.

Have an In-Service. Discuss the importance of "modeling" behaviors when working w/young children. I.E. use "please/thank you" not only among adults but w/children as well. Also, do not ask a yes/no question when there is not the option to say no. For example, Do you want to use the bathroom?" when you need the child to use the bathroom. Say what you mean and mean what you say, but be polite.  Another great tool is the book called Big Questions for Young Minds. I attended a workshop given by the authors (Dr. Janis Strasser and Lisa Mufson Bresson) last Saturday. It was a wonderful event.  I highly recommend this book for all Directors/Administrators and staff.

I often have new teachers watch "starting at square one"   It is an older Bev Bos video.  Not exactly to your comment, but the video shows an atmosphere that is welcoming.  Plenty of you tube videos to peruse.

I agree with Mary Airy's recommendation--Powerful Interactions: How to Connect With Children to Extend Their Learning.    A beneficial tool to illustrate and describe the power of respectful interactions between adults and children.   Another great book is Really Seeing Children by Deb Curtis.  It includes a collection of stories in helping educators understand self-reflective teaching and cultivating our ability to follow children's lead and to really see/understand what is driving children in their daily work.

In addition, from my experiences as a classroom teacher, I have learned over many years that a teacher's mindset is a crucial key in determining the approach in guiding children.  Having a mindset of being a partner with a child throughout the day instead of "being in charge" of the children can often change how the adult see children's behaviors.  Conscious Discipline and High Scope are additional resources (google them) that have a plethora of ideas and ways to partner with children so both adult and child can be and feel successful.
