    Hi there!

Hope yall are doing well. If I could just pick your lovely minds for a moment.

The struggle I have had for two years now is the following: teachers do not change their shelves to the new monthly curriculum items or teacher made items. Which in turn results in myself and management team staying until 12-1 am to change the shelves to adhere to the monthly themes.

I have tried the following as incentives: best teacher made item wins a gift card (teachers vote for each other's items), best teacher shelves same gift card incentive, five training over shelving unit changes and examples of what/how to do it.

What do you do to get your teachers to change their classroom environment to match the current curriculum?

    Thank you

I'd venture to guess the teachers cannot watch the children appropriately, safely and clean change shelves at the same time. I would suggest paid time to do that when the kids are not there, or send in a float to watch the kids while the teachers are making their crafts and changing shelves.  Speaking as a teacher I can tell you that would not happen because the kids would run amok and be huddles around me asking "what are you doing", "I want to do that". If you and a team of administrators are staying until 12-1 am to do it, you know how long it takes to do.  Offer a paid couple hours after kids are gone, provide food and see how it goes. You can write the cost off as meeting time.

    Hi there!

They all have two teachers and do have monthly meetings that are paid to change the items out.

My suggestion would be to not change everything out all at once. Change things once children have lost interest or are no longer productive with the materials. Or if you feel more comfortable with a set schedule, make one that allows for small changes at once. For example, on the first Monday of the month, change out the sensory table materials, on Tuesday, the block area, Wednesday, the dramatic play area, etc. These monthly themes are really organizing principles for the adults in the room. The children truly will not care if the dramatic play area is still set with "community helpers" while the sensory area changes to "fall leaves." You will have traded less all at once work for smaller chunks spread across time and think of how exciting it will be for the children to see something new in their room. Teachers could also get children to help with the set up. "So, children, we're done studying fall leaves and are going to learn about dinosaurs. What do we need in the room? What kinds of dramatic play props can you make? What would be fun to add to the blocks center? Can you help me put these exciting new books on the shelf?"

In that case then ask them in advance what the plan is. And set the expectation that they do it.

I like how you change out your cubbies to match your themes. Do you do every center that way ? I do add theme related teacher made activities to my themes . Is this something you have started? It’s a lot of work but it is a learning experience for the children. It needs to be team work to do all of that? I have been teaching for over 32 years in preschool. I have taught three-year-olds and still doing it. I do have a lot of things I have made over the years and could not get rid of them and it has become a storage problem for me. If it is required in your curriculum for them to do that then the teachers should do that no questions asked. I do however have regular things in my centers that the children can play with even though I have things related activities for them. So if they get bored playing with my theme activities then they will have something else to play with.

My teachers change out things slowly and usually introduce new items at circle time and them place them on the shelves, that way the children get an introduction on how to work with the materials. If staff have specific time to do this, talk to them about their plan for their time and what they are rearranging, write it down, then go and check on it to make sure it is done, just as you would manage that they are at work on time or doing progress reports on time, etc.

This sounds like it could be a management problem, as in how the teachers are being managed and what standards are you holding them to. There are lots of good management books out there to read, but remember that teachers are employees who need to be held accountable for their jobs, if it is a part of their job that they are not getting done, then it needs to be managed through a performance plan or some sort of process that tracks their performance that they meet standards of work and complete tasks as assigned.

Are the required theme changes imposed on teachers or are teachers part of the decision-making process? How much autonomy are teachers given to develop themes that resonate with them and the children in their classrooms? What reasons do the teachers' give for not implementing theme changes?

I would like to give everyone insight into how another center creates its learning environment and see if anyone else has a learning environment such as this.

At the school I work for the themes are different in all of the rooms. It is not structured; whatsoever. One group may be learning about bugs, another spring, and yet another birds. Our director is very hands-off and just lets the staff decide what they feel they would like to do. This in turn, makes it very difficult for teachers trying to plan for new weekly themes.

Since it is summertime, we have been given theme calendars from the director on what we will be doing for each month. These are the only structured themes that I have ever been given.

Our centers are basically the same all of the time. This is a very different environment for me based on my years in teaching. The centers are unchanging. New books about a theme may be placed on the bookshelves, but that is about it. The science area always has pinecones, shells, magnifying glasses, and color panels. The math center puzzles and other manipulatives etc.

I believe the reason staff would give for not changing out centers is that they do not have an incentive to do so due to lack of management. News is often heard through the grapevine and will trickle down to staff through notes, being called into the office, or speaking with other teachers.

We are supposed to have monthly staff meetings, but I have only been to one live session. Otherwise, we just receive monthly staff meeting notes that we read and sign for 1 CEU.

As a teacher, this is very disheartening. I have always worked in centers that changed their centers based on 1, 2, or 3 week themes. They would be changed based on the childrens' interests. We often had small tables, that denoted the math center which would have a counting, matching game, or puzzles based on the theme, a science table relating to the theme etc. At this school, the science area is just a large cabinet, not a table as well as all the other learning areas.

All of our " theme-based centers" are basically table top activities that are placed out on large tables in the room.

At other schools, our dramatic play center would change with each new theme. At this center, our dramatic play center is a mish-mash of a kitchen, plastic tool workbench, and plastic babies with a high chair and cribs. It has never been changed based on theme.

I would love to make changes to this and hope eventually to speak to the director on ways that the environment should be changed to encourage more excitement and interest in our learning centers.

Jennifer, your ideas for changing up the themes and reworking some of the centers is great, and I hope that you are able to bring your experience and knowledge into this new setting. It sounds like you've been thinking things through, so I hope you are able to influence the leadership.
