Reading picture books to a group on Zoom

Can anyone tell me if it's okay to read children's  picture books aloud to our parent/child playgroups using Zoom? How about posting our readings  on Facebook? Is it necessary to get permission from publishers? I'm getting mixed messages from people I have asked. Thank you.

    Hi,
I'm a preschool story time presenter at a public library and our city managers and lawyers are in the process of investigating that right now.  I'll let you know when we find out!

It may take a little while.  Government bureaucracies are notoriously slow, but I'll let you know as soon as I can.

I had a meeting with my supervisor today and the city lawyers have said that its up to each publisher to give permission.  Some have more restrictions than others apparently.  I don't have a lot of details yet, but there seems to be more leeway with streaming stories as opposed to recording them "canned," when anyone can access them at anytime.  We still haven't been authorized to do distant story times, but as the situation develops I'll share what info I receive with you.

Some authors are giving permission. Patricia Polacco has granted permission on her Facebook page with certain stipulations. Eager to hear the response from the legal department from the other person's post.

I turn books into songs and have a few of these singing book videos on my YouTube channel. I was told by authors that because I am not earning any money from this they appreciate the extra exposure for their books.  The issue is when someone is earning money from someone else's product without paying a royalty.

This is is a link to a wonderful read-aloud book to share.  The author has given permission.  Your children can add their own personal illustrations.

Thank you everyone. Scholastic made a recent announcement.  Please go to the website for the details and guidelines but Scholastic has made reading by teachers okay through June 30. We must adhere to the guidelines but it is really good news.

I spent most of yesterday afternoon compiling the list of books that my teachers have read or will read and reaching out to the publishers.  Most have online guidance and simply request that you indicate at the start of the reading that permission has been granted by the publisher and then report the books that are being read, especially if it is to be shared via a closed platform (we share ours via links to a Google Drive folder).  I have received many responses that either reiterate the requested parameters (indicate permission granted, share in a non-commercial venue, and agree to remove after a certain time period) or indicate that they are happy for teachers to use their books to support children.  I used this message followed by the list of books that we have read:
    Good Afternoon!
Across the nine classes of our program, we have read or plan to read the following books via video.  These books are only available to our families via links to a private Google Drive folder.  We serve children between 8 weeks and 4 years old.  We agree to delete the videos or to remove access to them by whatever deadline is set during this time of distance learning.

Edited to add: Several publishers have multiple imprints, so my advice is to create your list and then look for the contact info before you send the messages.  Larger houses like Random House, for example, will also incorporate Penguin, Puffin, RH Kids, etc., so you can handle large parts of your list via one message if you pre-screen.

    All,
I found the website that I used for my initial info.  It belongs to an author who has curated some of the info for publishers carrying her works but which also includes other publishers' info. https://www.katemessner.com/publisher-guidelines-on-fair-use-for-online-storytimes-read-alouds-during-covid-19-school-closures/
