  • 1.  Using WEMLS for Developmental Assessment (Wisconsin Members)

    Posted 06-29-2017 08:07 PM
Hi there fellow Wisconsin Members. I am wondering if anyone uses the Wisconsin Early Learning Model Standards (WEMLS) for developmental assessments? I'm looking to replace my current report card with something that is more developmental. I teach 3K and 4K. I'm hoping that someone would be willing to share with me if they have something. I've only been teaching in Wisconsin for 2 years, so I'm still getting used to using the WEMLS.

This is something I know a little bit about and felt compelled to respond. If you look to the WMELS book, WI Model Early Learning Standards, for guidance, page 6, it will tell you what these standards are not intended to be used for.  At the top of the page it states "WMELS dcoument IS NOT intended to be used as * A tool for program assessment, *A tool for program curriculum".  Further on down the page it then states "WMELS dcoument IS NOT intended to be used as *Age/grade level learning expectations that further define each performance standard for each age (grade) level." And additionally "WMELS document DOES NOT contain *Age/grade level learning expectations, *Curriculum or an assessment tool."  These standards "specify developmental expectations for children from birth through entrance to first grade." -page 2- They are a framework from which assessment tools, program expectations, and curriculum can be built.  I urge you to go to Collaborating Partners to find our more information on this.  Also, you have a collaboration coach in your area who would be more than happy to help you with finding an appropriate child assessment tool to use.  The website will be of great help for general information.  And, if you want to contact me personally, I would be happy to help. I am the coach in the northern region of Wisconsin.

Thanks for the question, Heather....that is a good one.  I agree with Robin that WMELS is a framework. You want to find an assessment (milestones) that supports the 5 Domains and principles of WMELS while meshes with your own programs philosophy and mission.  Let me know if you want some ideas.  I do have an example of a progress report a program I work with uses that supports WMELS, if you would like to see what it could be.   I'm so happy you are embracing WMELS as a program framework!!!
