  • 1.  class size in young fives program

I am a young fives teacher in a public school in a suburb outside of a large city. Right now my class size limit is 24 students to ONE adult-ME. I am trying to do some research to present to admin and our school board about the importance of small class sizes. The district  age qualification is students have to turn five between March 1-December 1. What do others have as far as class sizes and studnt/adult ratiofor this same type of class? Some call it 'Transition Kindergarten', 'Pre-K,' etc.

    Thanks,

    Hello,
Our Pre-K classroom ratio is 18. When we have after-school students (which Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade) then our ratio is going to 24

We are a small independent school, not public, but we have a maximum of 12 kids with two teachers, sometimes a third adult (teacher or volunteer).

I run a School of 188 children in Florida and have 2 class rooms of school Age Children. The one is a Kindergarten and First Grade class the 2nd is 2nd Grade thru 5th. The group size is 1:25 and works well until you start to add 4 year old's to the mix. I call it adding smoke the PreK children are quite and get into everything. I drop the ratio to 1:20 which is our PreK ratio for 4 year old's. I see the after school program as a club and not a structured environment since the kids have been in school all day not allowed to socialize even at lunch time. They need a place to interact with each other and learn how to get along which brings the teacher to be a referee sometimes. I believe this is a very important life learning skill. Independent homework time is provided but not forced. Children need to learn to make good choices but need opportunities to do so. Adolescence is a very important time and leave the education in the classroom supported by the after school program just not as structured relax and have fun let the children find themselves and their way.

Does anyone know what the NAEYC recommended child/adult ratio is for 4 year olds and 5 year olds? To be accredited by NAEYC-what is the recommended  ratio?
    Thanks,

Here is a link to the recommended class sizes from NAYEC

    https://www.naeyc.org/sites/default/files/globally-shared/downloads/PDFs/accreditation/early-learning/staff_child_ratio.pdf

Here is basically what it says it as well:

Age Category Ratio Maximum Class Size*
    Infant 1:4 8
    Toddler/Two 1:6 12
    Preschool 1:10 20
    Kindergarten 1:12 24
    **School-Age 1:15 30
*If your program is above the maximum class size then you will receive a no rating for that item.
