  • 1.  Full-day Pre–K Programs Lead to Better Long-term Outcomes For Dual Language Learners

Excerpt: According to Rebecca Vonderlack-Navarro, director of education policy and research at the Forum, policymakers and district leaders should expand and prioritize access to full-day pre–K for English Learners beginning at age three. Additionally, a system should be developed to identify English learners who scored at those lower levels on the K Screener to be able to prioritize additional supports and direct resources to ensure these students keep pace with their peers.

I believe this is a great thought and would be extremely beneficial to many families of students who are struggling English learners. More resources should be available beginning at younger ages like the ones mentioned.

I agree that Full-Day Pre-K programs would have positive outcomes for English Language Learners (ELLs) and educators. The supports provided for ELLs during the formative years of language development would be useful to general education students who are struggling as well. Having a solid foundation allows students to be successful in future grades/classes.

Indeed, I worked with GA Pre K for 9 years and I can attest to this. We had 6.5 hours with students a day, but the difference it made to ELL students was unbelievable. Kids will come in with no one in English but the end of ten months some aquire advance vocabulary in English and excel wonderfully in other content areas. Therefore, when 6.5 can be extended to a whole day what an impact will it make.
