  • 1.  Progress reports and sharing info. with families in Pre-K

While I know observations and anecdotal information is collected daily to drive instruction and make changes in the classroom. I am wondering if anyone can share information as to why data is collected and shared three times per year (I work with Pre-K 4). I work within a school district where the thought of having "progress reports" sent to Pre-K families should be done four times per year as that is the schedule for K-12 and should all be the same.

    Thank you!

I think that sharing it information three times a year can help explain the changes that are happening and progress being made in the classroom and better explain changes that have occurred. Sometimes the progress a child has made or milestones they have hit or changes in their life can be missed during the daily exchange of information. It gives both teachers and parents a time to sit down with each other to show exactly what is happening with that individual child. It is also an important part of parent engagement. So even if you dont have parent teacher conferences a progress report can help with keeping parents in the know.

Yes, that makes sense. Is there data that supports 3x/year for reporting progress to parents vs. 4x/year? **I am in a public school Pre-K classroom and progress monitor regularly and share information frequently with families. Though wondering if there is a reason more formal reporting is done 3x/year with this age group.

I don't think I have come across any information though I am now curious to see how the number was come up with. I would hazard a guess that it may come from the parents needing to feel like they are fully in the know of the progress their children are making and since children tend to make leaps in milestone gains more at this age it would make sense to have more frequent formal reporting given to the parents.

I've taught in 2 different schools. In the first school, we only sent home progress reports and conducted parent/teacher conferences once a year. They were held in January as registration for the following year began in February. After I left to stsy home, that school revised that stance and begun sending home progress reports twice a year, Fall and Spring.
When I started at my current school, we sent progress reports home 4 times a year, every quarter like the big kids. We are a prek through 8th grade school. I changed that and we send reports home 3 times per year, early November, mid-February, and end of May. I keep a portfolio for each child so I can show growth over time. I do keep anecdotal records and I also do direct assessing, one on one times where I ask students to do things, like count as high as they can, or sort out my colored bears, ect.
I hold "mandatory" conferences in October, and "optional" conferences in February. I meet with parents more often if they or I feel a need.
