Hello, I have seen the articles on how daycare / child care centers are not allowed to use expulsions?  I never knew it was allowed for such as group anyways.  My question is, if the child's behavior becomes inapprorpiate, dangerous to peers and staff, uncontrollable, and everything has been done as well documented on the service to help the child, then what?  I also have a concern for FCC Providers when the have to remove a child out of their care do to behaviorial issues, what happens?

You'll want to check with your state licensing consultant about any state requirements.  I have had to expel one child, but it was only after implementing different strategies in the classroom, trying a different class, bringing in an inclusion specialist, and getting him connected to a therapist and Life Skills Instructor.  A couple of conferences were held with the family and a plan was clearly outlined.  He was aggressive to the point that children and teachers were injured on a daily basis.  Everything was handled in such a clear and professional way that the family still hugs me when I see them out in public.  They were able to get him in a place with smaller classes which I think was to his benefit.

    Hi Tamara,
I see that you're from Illinois, that law is new for our state. I just recently attended a meeting with our local DCFS licensing reps and they said that the rule is in the works so that we know the exact details of what centers can/can't do. However, the general idea is just as you described: it's our responsibility to try different tactics, bring in outside resources (such as mental health consultants) provide the families with resources they can use, and document all of the different things. Should you then find that your center isn't the best place for that kiddo after exhausting all efforts, you then would help the family create a transition plan to a more appropriate place. I am, by no means, an expert on this topic so my interpretation could even be a little off. There is a ton of info on the Governor's Office of Early Childhood Development webpage.

    Hello Tamara,
I'm in California and the issue of expulsion is only pertinent to government funded preschool programs like Head Start.
The teacher has always had to document the child's behavior for head start to get funded, now they have to show why the child is expelled.
I have shown in my research that if the classroom environment has the appropriate toys out on the shelves for children they will play,  but most often the environment is lacking any self directed play.
    Thank you
