National Book Study?

  • 1.  National Book Study?

    Posted 03-26-2020 08:27 AM
    Hello Respected Colleagues,

Like all of you, I am trying to make sense of how to function as a leader during and after this challenging time. Looking ahead, I wondered if there is any interest in a national book study based on a paradigm-shifting book, such as From Teaching to Thinking-A Pedagogy for Reimagining Our Work by Ann Pelo and Margie Carter?

I pitched the idea to our Affiliate, Michigan AEYC, who were delighted to see where this could go in our state. Could we figure out a way to connect at multiple levels? If we engaged at the national, affiliate, and chapter level we could effectively bind ourselves to each other as people who care about the field and who see this historic cultural disruption as a time to make a change in ourselves for the greater good. Perhaps Ann and Margie would be interested in guiding this with discussion groups trickling down to the local chapters?

Just thought I would float this idea out there this morning...We all need each other and together we can create something even better than before in our field.

For all the wondering children and adults,
    Chris

At New Jersey Educators Exploring the Practices of Reggio Emilia, NJEEPRE, we spent this year doing a book study using From Teaching to Thinking. It was great. It would be really interesting to have a book study across the country and also encourage those who lead and teach in public and private schools with preschools and primary grades to join the discussion.

Once we do that, the next discussion should be on how to manage the implementation of the changes discussed in the book.

    Hello Nora,
Margie Carter just reached out to me and I wonder if you would like to be part of the conversation? I think your expertise in the book study followed with further ideas for implementation would be tremendously helpful. Have you created a study guide?

I would love to join you on the call. We did not have a study guide per se for the book. We used a book study protocol that we found online but implemented it in a pretty fluid way. Our group was small. It might be more difficult to do this in a very large group. It would be great to hear Margie Carter's ideas.

Doing a national study with From Teaching to Thinking at this time is a beautiful idea!

With the medical issue driving how we live right now, it is as though we have hit the pause button with this awful, "unseen" but lived threat to our lives. It is an opportunity to rethink everything related to our pedagogy if we want to engage in that.

Ann Pelo and Margie Carter's book is a perfect vehicle to start that conversation of rethinking our pedagogy and go even further with the ideas articulated in the book. We could examine ourselves and our beliefs and go on to look at the philosophies and theories that guide our work with children, and how we interact with children, families, and their communities. What a wonderful change we might develop from those conversations!

    Nora,

I'm so happy to hear from a kindred spirit. :)
    I agree completely.

Erica Willard, Executive Director from Michigan AEYC, is reaching out to Gwen Simmons at NAEYC to get the ball rolling and see where this goes. I hope to be a facilitator of sorts... But would love to have Margie and Ann as the thought leaders.

Maybe a couple of us can be part of this to help guide! alongside the authors?

Since our group, New Jersey Educators Exploring the Practices of Reggio Emilia (NJEEPRE) did a book study of From Teaching to Thinking this year, I would also love to help with facilitating the study. We had different people volunteer to guide each discussion meeting using some book study guidelines that we found online. Most of our meetings were online using Zoom with video. I bet that Ann Pelo and Margie Carter might be interested in joining in if a way to manage this can be found.

    Christine,
I am very interested in participating in this book study. I work at the Iowa Regents' Center for Early Developmental Education on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa. I work with the infant/toddler teachers at our university child care center. This is our second year of doing a book study during the spring semester. Last year we read Infants and Toddlers at Work by Ann Lewin-Benham and this year we are reading Children's Lively Minds by Deb Curtis and Nadia Jaboneta. Our university has moved to online classes and asked us to work from home so the child care center is closed for at least 4 weeks. We are continuing our book study via ZOOM so we have a way to continuing discussing what we are learning together as we introduce STEM investigations to infants and toddlers. I have not read the book you are proposing to use but would love to be involved in your book study.

I think that we would need to figure out how to set this up. Also, maybe we would need to initially break the book study up by region so that the groups would be smaller. I am not sure how many people would sign up. We would have to decide on how to host the groups and provide some guidelines for facilitating the discussions. Another question is whether NAEYC could be the host Zoom site or another tool to connect.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to structure the book study? I am certainly willing to get the ball going but I do not have access to an interactive video tool that can host huge numbers of folks for an hour at a time.

    Hi Christine,

This is an exciting and brilliant idea. I work in ECFE in Minneapolis and our district pays for our membership. I just discussed this idea with a colleague. We could even do it for our PDPLC professional learning next year and include action research. We're willing to jump in and participate and bring to our local and state NAEYC affiliates!

On a separate topic I had a question and was curious. I heard on the news MI cancelled school for the rest of the year. What was the reasoning behind that I assumed it was because the school districts had not made the investment in technology. In MN we are providing school via distance learning the Governor gave teachers two weeks to plan and prepare. Some districts were more ready then others. Minneapolis is pushing out 1 computer to each family and couldn't do 1 to 1 for each child as originally planned.

I think 🤔 it's a good time to start to use the technology to change the way we teach and am excited about the possibilities.

    Hello Luann,

Thanks for the question regarding Michigan. :) Late last week, Governor Whitmer gave direction to the school districts to offer hybrid learning. So teaching and learning will continue in our state, although we do not have 1:1 technology for students. In pursuit of equity, we are reaching children with printed materials, books, letters, texts, and phone calls, as well as using virtual learning methods. Our districts will have to provide a plan later in April to show how they will accomplish this within reason K-12. We've also been given guidelines and a template to create these plans.

For my own local state-funded preschool program,  we felt connection was our first and most important priority, and so we began in mid-March to reach out, listen, and give needed resources, like food drop locations. We created a printed Home Learning Book, gathered books and learning supplies for a Home Learning Kit, and safely distributed these prior to shelter in place directions.

Since then, we've made dedicated efforts to set up learning groups, communicate a reasonable time to connect each day, and use multiple methods to teach from the Home Learning Book, which is full of simple learning activities based on HighScope's COR using household goods. We've also launched a letter writing campaign with stamps provided for three "volleys" of writing with the help of a local funder. We have experimented with Loom for read alouds as well as many other tech-enabled methods.

Our survey indicates a total of 66% of our 145 families in 9 classrooms have Internet and an enabled device, with a low of 40% in one classroom and a high of 94% in another. What we've learned after three weeks of engagement, is to make connection with families a priority and press in to care for staff, meeting very regularly with the bare bones of a plan for moving forward. We meet with staff two times a week to support each other during this difficult time.

More about the National Book Study on From Teaching to Thinking will be coming out soon, and I look forward to connecting with each of you as we assess the future. I remain hopeful that great good can come from this time.

    Together,
    Chris

    Thank you Christine!

I misunderstood the news when it said just MI School was cancelled through the end of the year. I took it literally wish they would of said closed and planning for distance learning but sounds like Governor came out later with the distance learning plan.

In MN School was cancelled for two weeks for teachers to plan. Then our district had a week of spring break. We start distance learning in our district tomarrow. My team is Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) we offer classes for families and there children ages birth to 5 years old one time a week for two hours. I'm the Early Childhood Teacher and my colleague is the Parent Educator. After 1 hr of EC the parents go with PE for 1 hr of checkin child development topics discussion and home connection. We will be using zoom for real-time meetings and Seesaw for at home activities and sharing student work. We are planning for this plan until May 1st but will see as things change day by day.

Thank you again for brining this National Study forward. I appreciate your response to how you are distance learning in MI and your practices.  I'm not familiar with the read aloud platform you mentioned and I will look more into that.
    Wishing you well!

    Hi Everyone--

We are currently working with some affiliates (and others with experience doing this) on pulling together some tip sheets/how-to guides so that this can easily taken up by folks at a variety of levels.  We're exploring a hybrid model, with some online video conference meetings among small groups and then groups posting summaries of their discussions and additional question here to Hello to facilitate a conversation across all of the groups.

In addition to the book mentioned above,  we've also had interest in doing groups related to Each and Every Child: Teaching Preschool with an Equity Lens (which many of you received as a member benefit) and also around the new edition of Anti-Bias Education for Young Children and Ourselves.

We will have information on how to self-organize on this very soon and are all very existed to make this happen.

    Dear Michael:

Perhaps there should be two national book study groups. One for teachers and assistant teachers and one for leaders of centers and schools hosting, not just preschool, but first through third grades, that way covering the full scope of what NAEYC included as early childhood education.

I think From Teaching to Thinking is a highly accessible book. In addition to the books that you suggested, there are other very accessible and beautifully written books: Teaching Four-Year-Olds, A Personal Journey, also from Exchange Press. Of course, the books that you mentioned in your post would be great for teachers and leaders, but more so for teachers.  From Teaching to Thinking's accessibility and clarity is by far the best book that I have encountered in a long time for leaders. Another book that NJEEPRE studied in our Roundtables this year was Really Seeing Children, which is very accessible and has a focus on younger children.

The organization and its culture starts with the leadership and trickles down. That is what makes From Teaching to Thinking so important.

I hope to see the info that you have for self-organizing. That is basically what we did with our group: New Jersey Educators Exploring the Practices of Reggio Emilia (www.newjerseyreggionetwork.org). We began with a protocol to give ourselves a beginning structure but it was not strictly followed. The conversation took pathways and turns based on the participants' interpretation and personal situations. We met in person and online, using Zoom.

From Teaching to Thinking is a FABULOUS book.  It would be an honor to do a  book study with the authors.
How do we see if this is possible?

Hello, Chris & Everyone (who replied to this original post)!

I am so excited for you Chris as I read the interests of so many like-minded leaders supporting this idea of a national book study! You have always been that courageous person with innovative ideas, not afraid to re-imagine and re-think. You have sparked something here and can't wait to join this exciting journey with everyone! As so many have shared already, my heart is for the educators who educate our young children. This book study is such a timely proposal, as well as for my future doctoral dissertation topic :). Thank you for including me in your journey!

    Dear Hello community--

We are excited to announce plans to move forward with the idea of a virtual book club first proposed by Christine Whitmire in this thread.

We have decided to focus on three books:

Our overall goal is to support this as a largely self-organized project.  We plan to recruit individuals who will serve as organizers of individual study groups.  They will form groups on their own, coming up with a schedule that serves their group best. These organizers will also participate in a webinar where we will share in more depth some of the information that’s in the support documents linked below.  We will also host both a kick-off and end-of-study webinar with the authors of each book as a way of providing bookends to  the experience.

We have prepared these documents to orient interested members and they are attached to my post:

    • Organizing a Virtual Book Club: A Tip Sheet
    • Professional Book Clubs: An Introduction for Educators

We ask that you promote this opportunity among your networks and encourage folks who you feel will do a good job to sign up as organizers of a group.

Here’s the link to recruit organizers:

    Dear Hello community--

A big thank you to everyone who has signed up to organize a virtual study group!

As a reminder, we have decided to focus on three books:
If you are interested in serving as an organizer (which means you help pull a group together to read the book and talk about it online), then please sign up here:

We close recruiting one week from today (May 18)  and will be in contact with all organizers to talk about next steps.

    best,
    Michael
