New Ideas

    Hello,
I am looking for new career ideas. I have worked as a preschool teacher, site director, middle school after school programs and as an ABA Therapist. As I am preparing to return to the workforce I am not sure what to do. I don't want to return to the classroom. What are some of the more unique jobs early childhood professionals do?

Hi  what about being a nanny?  You wouldn't be in a classroom but someone's home.  There's different kinds -  for lack of a better term regular, travel, special needs, school age, part time, high end, nighttime, babies - single & multiple - twins, triplets & stair steps ( multi age ).  There's also NCS - newborn care specialists- they take care of newborns for 1 - 3 months depending on what the family needs then move on to the next family.  Just a few ideas!! Good luck finding where you fit!!!

    Hi:

How about coaching or providing professional development to early childhood staff? Helping programs improving their QRIS or acquire accreditation. You can also provide support to families through HR wellness programs at a large company or university.

Hello, in Oregon we have Child Care Resource and Referral centers.  I work at a CCR&R as a Quality Improvement Specialist. We offer training for early childhood professionals and help with professional development plans, do TA for centers and home providers, help with the state quality rating improvement system called SPARK and just about anything else child care providers need help with.  The job is challenging and rewarding. Hope you find your path.

Have you looked into informal education opportunities? When I transitioned out of the classroom I worked for Parks and Recreation and later a children's museum. For me, informal education is a nice balance of teaching and program management without some of the limitations and constraints that formal education can put on teachers.

Have you considered In-Home Child Care?  I too have worked as a preschool teacher and a site director.  But in my 30 years of ECE, my favorite job by far has been running my small in-home business.

I can customize it to fit my needs, personality, and strengths.  I was able to be home with my own young children, and there when they arrived home from school.  I make more money than I did as a preschool teacher, and equal to that as director.  I am able to get a few house chores done, (ie. laundry, start dinner, clean bathroom) when children are napping.  The quality of my in-home businesses has always been superior to my center experiences.

Right now my in-home business is open 4 days/week.  I serve children birth to three, with a maximum of 6 children.  I am always full, and have a long waiting list.  I enjoy the close personal relationships with both children and families that is a result of this small-group experience.

I feel that more ECE professionals should consider this option.

Thank Elizabeth, I did think about that, however, our home just is not built for in-home care, unfortunately.

Have you thought about working at the college level and sharing your expertise with prospective teachers or working in a library?

    Hi Oliska,
For another take on your question, ask yourself: what kind of problems do you want/like to solve? Is there a future you want to help create with your "particular set of skills?"
Good luck on the search for a new path!
