Our public school preschool program has a few tricycles.  I am wondering how programs deal with helmet use for multiple children.  We don't have enough helmets for each child and do not want to ask parents to donate helmets for their children.  Any suggestions on how to manage helmet use while following health guidelines to minimize issues like lice?

    Hi Jennie,
In our community (Anchorage, Alaska), the local fire department has in the past helped supply bicycle helmets to individuals who couldn't afford them. They were available at different stations throughout the city. While helmets may not always be available, I always recommended that parents check with the fire stations in their area of town. I am not sure if they supported programs or just individuals. My suggestion is for you to check with your local fire stations to see if they have a similar community outreach program for promoting bicycle safety.

Another suggestion, Wal*Mart and other stores will often donate items as part of their community involvement & giving back to the community programs.

If you are able to get some donated helmets, you could assign them to individual children in your program. If a child leaves the program, the helmet could be cleaned and reassigned. Good luck!
