    Hi,
I am looking for some tips and tricks to keep a child who has learning disabilities occupied during nap time so that they are not being loud and waking up other children during nap time. We know this child needs additional supports during this time and are looking for new tools to fill out tool box and gain more knowledge.

    Any thoughts would be helpful!
    Thanks!

What are his/her struggles? Things to avoid?

He often yells or makes loud noises while other children are still resting. He has a hard time staying focused, so quiet activities are either not interesting or have to be changed so frequently they run out of options quickly. We've tried offering different spaces to be in (i.e. sitting at the table, or looking out the window which he enjoys). Anything he can make a loud sound with, he will. So we typically try to avoid hard blocks. I think the biggest struggle is his own voice. Because he has learning disabilities, it is tough to help him understand that his volume is affecting those around him.

That's a great idea! I just got a CD Walkman that he could use if he's craving auditory input. Maybe some books on CD will help.

Here are some "think outside the box" ideas.  Is he seeking auditory input at that time?  If so, maybe the whisper phone could help?   I use it with beginning readers so they can hear themselves read better.  They're plastic and pretty durable.  Whatever noise he makes would go into his own ear, so it might help him understand how loud he is being, and naturally encourage him to be quieter.

Other than that, I am unsure.  We have had similar difficulties at our school in the past.  We always offer books and quiet nap toys to our non-nappers, but sometimes these diversions just don't work. Does it help to have a teacher sit with him?  You could try felt boards with felt "blocks" or use foam blocks/ wrap blocks in fabric to reduce noise so he can build with them, it that's where his interests lie.  It sounds like he has a short attention span, so you may need several options depending on how long your nap takes.

Best of luck finding what helps him be successful!

    Hi Mary,
Thanks for your thoughts! I have never heard of the Whisper Phone before. I just bought a pack of them and want to give it a try. I also though of using a CD Walkman so he can listen to stories on CD while the rest of the class naps. Fingers crossed some of these awesome tips help.

    Thanks again!

    Hello!

As a previous aide in an intermediate special educational department, what really worked for us was having a lot of textured napping materials and mats. We had a few sleeping bags and some bean bags. Also some character blankets that were donated to us were a treat because one particular student LOVED Star Wars - so he got the blanket with Star Wars on it every rest period. I also had a few quiet games (games made with just Velcro and laminated paper) for my busy students. Sorting tiny erasers with little prongs or even a piece of paper with stickers they could do to work fine motor skills. Also, have you tried a naptime song/video. There are wonderful videos on YouTube with just soft music and puppies running through the grass. So soothing and SO relaxing.

    Good luck!

    Hi Nequoya,
I've gotten a few other responses about trying textured materials. This seems like a great idea to try. Also, I love your sorting tiny erasers with prongs idea.

Thank you so much for your help!

Hello my name is Millie and this is my first time responding to your email. I also work at a Center and in my class there are a few non- sleepers. What we did asked the parents to put a bag together for their child. We also put these non-sleepers together in one place. They have all sorts of things in the bags and they just sit on their cots coloring, drawing, whatever they want to do. Even though they talk to each other, it's not loud enough to disturb the sleepers.
    I hope this helps.
    Millie

    Hi Millie,
Thank you so much for your reply. We have some quiet activities to use, but having a bag from home could be very helpful! I'm sure this child has items at home that he may love more than ones we have at school. We will touch base with the parents.

    Thanks again!
