The literacy movement has reached great success encouraging families to read aloud to children with programs like Reach Out and Read. We believe this idea has a similar potential to transform the way families interact with children around math-making it a common, and doable, everyday family activity.

What are some ways that you have found to promote family math?

I implemented the math games from Teaching Young Children last year into our classroom. It was amazing to see how well it helped the children understand 1 to 1 correspondence and associating numbers with quantities. I also took a 2 day training on Playful Math based from the articles. I keep that issues at hand now as I refer back to it often. I am looking to use the "Message In a Backpack" at the beginning of the coming school year to help parents do more math at home with their children. These resources are a great help and that's why I appreciate the NAEYC publications. I just recently finished reading "Serious Fun" which again has math activities. These are all great resources for bringing the knowledge of math to our families. Thanks again Jessica.

Kristen Reed and I worked so hard on these materials and we want to make them the best that they can be for teachers, children and families while keeping the physical materials low cost and resources free wherever possible. We are continuing to work on them and hope to add more content areas as well!

Let us know how the "Message in a Backpack" works and of course we are always trying to make things as useful as possible--so if you have suggestions or ways that you implemented the games or family resources that worked well (or maybe didn't go so well) we'd love to hear it! We found that the children really liked having math mini-books that corresponded with the games they were doing in the classroom--and it often helped families understand better the math their children were learning!

I have just started working with the founder of an early math inspired educational toy and have been absolutely fascinated with all of the research about how important early math is to future all around academic success! Compared to how little it is discussed and taught in the 0-5 age range especially. The founder of the math manipulative I'm working with used a lot of snack math with his toddler. I'd love to hear about the math manipulative you are developing, as well as how educators integrate math into their infant and toddler classrooms! We tend to focus on preschoolers, but so much can be done with infants and toddlers too!

There are lots of language rich opportunities to talk with very young children about the math all around them--what kinds of activities have you tried? 

We play a game that starts, "Numbers, numbers, one, two, three, how many fingers do you see?" and then we hold up fingers in different configurations and have the children either say or try to imitate the teachers' finger configuration. With little ones, teachers could then count each little finger! Of course, so many songs for young children have lots of math in them as well.

Any favorite songs little ones love that also emphasize math? I can think of "5 little monkeys" others?

I'd love to hear about the math manipulative you are developing, as well as how educators integrate math into their infant and toddler classrooms! We tend to focus on preschoolers, but so much can be done with infants and toddlers too!

There are lots of language rich opportunities to talk with very young children about the math all around them--what kinds of activities have you tried?

We play a game that starts, "Numbers, numbers, one, two, three, how many fingers do you see?" and then we hold up fingers in different configurations and have the children either say or try to imitate the teachers' finger configuration. With little ones, teachers could then count each little finger! Of course, so many songs for young children have lots of math in them as well.

Any favorite songs little ones love that also emphasize math? I can think of "5 little monkeys" others?

I have just started working with the founder of an early math inspired educational toy and have been absolutely fascinated with all of the research about how important early math is to future all around academic success! Compared to how little it is discussed and taught in the 0-5 age range especially. The founder of the math manipulative I'm working with used a lot of snack math with his toddler. It's so important to be able to implement math language with little ones. Thanks again for sharing!

Yes! Love these ideas! And songs! Who doesn't love "Five Little Monkeys"? 

The product I'm working with is called Kontu, a set of magnetic wood blocks. Currently only in prototype form but launching soon via an Indiegogo campaign. It has been absolutely amazing to see children from 12 months all the way to 8 years play with them! They can replicate simple equations and sequences using dot cards and other objects placed in the trays. You can see it at www.KontuKids.com

It seems as if there is no "too early" when it comes to early math learning! Your research is so wonderful to see. My eyes have been opened to seeing just how capable small children are of learning math. I wish my parents knew when I was a kid! Reading was of course such a great thing to provide early but I know attitudes towards math would be different if it was taught earlier with more play-based methods.

We love the grocery shopping idea and using "math" language during every day activities.

My favorite way to encourage math with 5/9 year old's is grocery shopping! Teaching about sugar grams believe it or not. Today's super markets are now getting the child carts which is awesome! 

My second way would be money for food items in the imagination area! 


the third is The electric number peg puzzle by Melissa and Doug ! It's really nice, it says the number and describes the picture .  ( Five dragon flies) taking  turns removing and putting the numbers in place.
