    Hi
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to help a 5 year old boy who does not have a sense of himself in space. He is a big kid and often moves his body in such a way that it bothers or hurts other people inadvertently - waving arms, too close to others in line, leans over when sitting on the carpet during group time, etc.
    Would love some advice.
    Thanks
    elisa

I don't know what's new in this field, but in the sixties our research team trained body orientation in space by having children step over and bend under a stick place on any available object. We also had them walk and crawl through tight place we manipulated like two chairs back to back with just enough space to get a child's body through without touching. We believed that the thinking that it took to do such behaviors became unconscious habit over time.

You might look up proprioception which is the "body awareness" sense. Occupational therapists can provide a lot of information on this. Here is a website to visit with some info: The Inspired Treehouse.

You might also reference the books The Out of Sync Child by Carol Kranowitz and Balanced and Barefoot by Angela Hanscom.
