What is the most insightful/impactful book you have read regarding early childhood education? What did you take away from it? How did you apply it?

The most worn out (i.e., most frequently used) books on my bookshelves are Bredekamp's & Copple's DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE PRACTICE and Derman- Sparks' ANTI-BIAS CURRICULUM. But the book that has inspired me most recently is Ann Pelo's and Margie Carter's FROM TEACHING TO THINKING: A PEDAGOGY FOR REIMAGINING OUR WORK (Exchange Press 2018). It synthesizes reflection that nourishes grown-ups' souls and a practical roadmap for helping young children become deep thinkers. It resonates with my work in media literacy - we share a goal of creating a culture of inquiry as an important response to life in the digital world and an alternative to the incursions of pre-scripted curricula that emphasize standardization and compliance. It asks us to stop and ponder the deep questions, like What is the purpose of education? and What kind of world do we want to live in (and how do we communicate that vision in our work with children)? An inspiring read.

Good Morning Gloria,  Hands down, Pamela Brilliante's, The Essentials: Supporting Young Children with Disabilities in the Classroom!  The content is current, relevant, easily understood and the strategies are applicable to the realities of today's early childhood classrooms.  With regards to application, I am the Assistant Director of Inclusion for my county's Developmental Disabilities Board and my inclusion team supports EC professionals in their classrooms through the development of engaging and trusting relationships, coaching, modeling and knowledge-sharing.  The Essentials book increased my team's awareness so much, we now purchase and share the book with the centers we partner with as a component of our Ohio State approved training.  If you plan to attend this year's NAEYC conference, Pamela Brilliante's session is one you won't want to miss!  On a side note, I will also be presenting on the topic of, Successful environments for all children: Understanding the characteristics of high-quality inclusive classrooms, Friday morning.  I would love to meet you!

Wow! There are so many excellent resources out there. Since children and families are so diverse, I couldn't even begin to answer this broad question. I would look for information that both aligns with your values, and can be applied with strong consideration for the cultural diversity of the families you serve. Some resources are much better at this than others. I have found the resources I tend to go back to over and over are those that emphasize family collaboration and child individualizations over canned phrases, and interactions but I've definitely used "canned phrases" and ways of interacting too!

    Dear,  Gloria,

What a wonderfully thoughtful question to ask!  Thanks kindly be to you for making this post. The most I insightful book I have read, regarding early childhood education is Stephanie Feeney's,  Nancy Freeman's,  and Peter Pizzolongo's (2010) Ethics and the Early Childhood Educator Using the NAEYC Code Second Edition.

I gathered a lot of content that strengthened my better judgment so that I would be ready to solve dilemmas. The content influenced how I deal with my duties in early childhood education,  and it gave me a core goal to focus on achieving each day.

I apply what I have gained in online discussions as well as the workplace.

    Best,

    Victoria M.
