At the beginning of the pandemic in March we had over 17,000 licensed childcare programs in Texas which included centers, homes, faith based programs, after-school programs etc. As of September 2020 we only had around 8,700 that were still open or had reopened, but most them were still operating at less than 50% of their capacity. We have shared these numbers with our governor's covid task force, with our local, state and federal reps and other elected officials as well our Chambers and Economic Development groups. However no one seems to taking the situation serious enough to do anything about it.
Does anyone have any numbers of how many childcare providers there were pre-pandemic versus today. My concern is that at least in Texas, but I'm sure in other states as well, that we will lose another 50% of the remaining centers by the end of the year, without another immediate economic stimulus package. If you have those numbers, please share so I can add it to the data I am keeping in Texas.
