Anti-Racism for Early Childhood Educators and Parents

  • 1.  Anti-Racism for Early Childhood Educators and Parents

    Posted 06-22-2020 04:38 PM
    Hello all,

I've recently compiled a list of resources to help support early childhood educators and parents - particularly those of us who are white - to explore race and racism with children, and work towards becoming actively anti-racist. There are many such lists available online, but I have tailored mine specifically to parents/educators of young children (ages 0-6) and written a short review of each resource to help guide the reader. I hope this resource can be helpful in supporting conversations and inspiring actions! These conversations have long been essential, and I am heartened as more and more people recognize the importance of talking about race and racism in our society beginning (in a developmentally appropriate way) as young as possible. I have two request of those of you in this forum:

    1. Please take, share, and use this resource if you think it will be of help. Message if you would like a copy of this list OR look below. I've attached the PDF in a reply below (reply #11).
    2. Do you have a favorite resource that is missing from this list? I'd love to hear about it and add it.

Thank you all so much for your continued work in these unprecedented times.

    Sending strength, support, and solidarity,

    So sorry Emmy,
I did not read very carefully, did I?  I would love to have your list. I know some of my colleagues and I would like to see if there is anything we can learn from or share with our child care partners. I am an ECE coach doing mostly QRIS work.  Thank you for taking the initiative to compile such a list. As a black woman in this field, I truly appreciate your support in ways you can't imagine.

    Peace for all,

    Kelly Clark

    Hi Emmy,
Thanks so much for sharing this.  I found lots of useful resources.

I didn't see that many that were specifically aimed at Black and Indigenous parents and caregivers or other caregivers of color discussing race and racism with  kids in their communities so I thought I'd also offer these.

On talking with kids of color about white supremacy:

    https://www.colorlines.com/articles/dos-and-donts-talking-kids-color-about-white-supremacy

On talking to all kids about racism, with specific advice for adults of color and white adults.

    https://www.vox.com/identities/2020/6/9/21283715/how-to-talk-kids-racism-race-protests

On the emotions of Black parents trying to protect Black children in this world:

    https://medium.com/@realsabijoy/too-great-a-burden-to-bear-aae6b3462aeb#.eqad5i4cb

And here's a resource from The Intergalactic Conspiracy of Childcare Collectives that has sections for "parents and caregivers of Black Children" and "resources for self-care as black parents" as well as for "parents and caregivers of non-Black children of color".   It has resources for children of all ages.
