Early Childhood Education Programs in Rural America Suffer from the Lack of Teachers with Specialized Training: Solutions?

As school begins for millions of young children living in the rural areas of the country, thousands of their teachers are not even aware of what they do not know about how children learn or what they should be teaching. Many teachers teach as they were taught, whether correctly or not, it is all they know. What solutions are there to reach teachers in remote areas and who have little funding or previous educational experiences?

I work in rural environments. The situation is troubling, but I'm somewhat relieved by the fact that these child-care situations are often better than the home environment from which the children come.  I've also found how to affect some progress in these under-prepared staffs. I discovered the hard way that under-prepared staffs don't do well with criticism, but you can find their growing edge and speak to it both individually and in groups. I'm now offering no-topic presentations where I stimulate discussion about topics that a group of childcare providers offers as being of interest.

I love this discussion. The county should create awareness about lack of enough teachers to support our rural areas. WE need to speak out to get the attention of our leaders.
