I've added more quick, fun math activities for preK. Just a few at a time, so as not to overwhelm. Stuffed animals graphing, shoe sorting, and cola cup filling. Please share with parents, caregivers, and teachers. Simple support is the name of the game these days! Hope this helps! https://www.carriecutler.com/

    Hello,

Since many of you are making videos to share with parents and children from your home, I collaborated with a colleague from the NAEYC Creative Services team on some tips for making videos at home.

Read the blog post, "Making Videos at Home: Tips for Educators" on the NAEYC.org website.

    Hi NAEYC Friends,

I hope that everyone is staying safe. I'm looking forward to the days when we can look back on this as a memory and remind folks of how CHILD CARE is the backbone of our entire society.

Until then, I thought I'd share this compilation of resources that some of you may find helpful. Please share as you see fit. You can also submit resources you think need to be added.

Yes, thank you-what a comprehensive, well organized collection of resources- great to see/share. Not sure if any of the resources listed here https://wke.lt/w/s/SNyMmt would be of interest for your list. Also wanted to mention for those looking to create their own lists of online resources to share with families, the free tool Wakelet has been very useful/easy to use.

    Hi Michelle,

that's a question that I am asked fairly regularly, I understand!

are you working in California? If so, I'll send you some information, specific to that 'curriculum'. I hesitate to use that word for such young children😊

in general though, for two year olds I don't advise my teachers to Start off with  readers when it comes to language,. You'll agree that it's all about building vocabulary and establishing pre-reading and pre-writing skills. So lots of storytelling, poems, songs, rhymes, puppetry, classified cards, audio books etc. I'm not a fan of screens at this stage of development.

This site has some good stuff for developing language with toddlers ( some things are free)  - www.montessoriforeveryone.com

Please let me know your thoughts.

    best wishes

    Hi
As we face being home and together in these next weeks, this discussion and sharing will be important for our children and families.
The web site of the New York Public Library offers over 300,000 books your may download for free.  Additionally, there are free manuscripts, maps, etc. available to download.
Educational entities are struggling for ideas of how to share materials with families without computers or on-line access (those who can not afford such access or are in rural areas that have no coverage.  Yes cell phones may be used, but there are complications of  cell phone coverage using  as well as the smaller screen.
So what is left as a way of sharing--sending materials through mail?
These ideas are something to ponder and perhaps to use.

You can also go to YouTube. Put in the name of a good children's book and there will be many options come up of people reading the book and all children can see the illustrations.

We feel for all those impacted by the disruption, stress, and anxiety brought on by coronavirus. We are doing our part at the Eastern Region Association of Forest and Nature Schools (ERAFANS) to provide support in the way of FREE online training. Although digital, online courses and webinars provide a sense of community and a way to encourage one another. And it's purposeful use of our time! Online training ripples out to parents who are also searching for ways to help their children thrive at home. Hi Scott,
I think this is a great idea. I was thinking of something similar. Would you post them via youtube? I was thinking that they might be even more enjoyable to watch if they were made into quick little song dittys - like a catchy PSA that would get stuck in your head. If you had a sample script I would try to turn it into a song with my ukulele, maybe we could partner up on this project?! Just a wild idea. Let me know if you're interested :)

    Posted 03-25-2020 09:58 AM

    Hello Scott,
In response to the pandemic and subsequent time for young children at home, our teams have created a Home Learning Book of 36 lessons based on HighScope's COR items. In addition, we safely delivered 150 Home Learning Kits of resources and supplies to all of the families in our program to assist with teaching from the Book.

The next day, we established the following goals to guide our Continuous Learning Plan:
    1)Build relationships first and foremost
2)Communicate our plan for learning clearly
3)Teach our families how to use a virtual format 4)Further the HighScope content with authentic learning and assessment, mentoring our families

We created private Facebook Home Learning Groups with specific goals for families, using the supplies, Home Learning Book, and additional resources sent home, as well as everyday items found in the home. We have videos created that introduce the importance of our Kits, that they are a learning tool and we reference Home Learning Book lessons in subsequent teaching videos.

We have established a few criteria for what seems to make for a strong home learning video (based on family engagement and posts):
1)Prepare the read aloud beforehand as you would in the classroom with best practice strategies for read alouds and questions to the families
2)"Channel Mr. Rogers" in your approach and speak a little more slowly, and in a friendly approachable manner, talk about everyday life as well as the lesson to connect with families
3)Show the children and families that you live in a home! Use your own family members for lessons if you are comfortable with that
4)Keep video lessons brief (3-5 min) to help children stay engaged in listening
5)Be sure to note open-ended extensions and the "why" for the lesson in simple terms 6)Always ask for a "see and do" at the end from the families to assess they have learned from the video lessons or story, ask them to post what they have done with the lesson and have them give feedback

Our next step will be to hold Facebook Live-Home Learning Sessions to provide the give and take needed in a real dialogue as well as help us understand how we can assess the learning taking place. We typically have class on Mon-Thurs. We are not sure how many Facebook Live events we will offer per week, we are determining that with family and teacher input.

This process is not perfect and evolves daily. It is important to note we include all families in phone calls, text messages and the good, old-fashioned letter to be sure we touch the lives of all of our families in the program. :)

I am happy to share our resources and would love to discuss the wonderful work everyone else is doing in the virtual world. We see this as continuous learning for all!

    Be well my friends!

    Christine,

I love your process and tips!  I am so grateful you shared them.   I found them to be very helpful and will incorporate them in my online  planning.  I am waiting to hear the final directive for teaching via distance learning starting April 6 in Early Childhood Family Education in Minneapolis Public School District.  We offer parents and their children classes ages birth to 5 yrs old, 1 time a week for two hours and the parents get 1 hour with a parent educator and the children stay with me  the early childhood teacher and an a assistant for child led play and learning.

    • Planning the Big Questions for the story time is so important
    • I do, we do, you do will be important for formative assessment

We are going to use SeeSaw for activities and giving the families and children the opportunity to share their work back with the teacher.

I think we just can't take what we did in the classroom and move it on line.  We have to modify and plan the amount of time we engage during the live virtual meetings and provide parents and kids learning activities via an online platform that they can do any time and any place that allows kids to share and show us their work and teachers can give positive feedback and suggestions for more practice and/or extend the learning.

    Wishing you well.  Warm regards,

    Thanks, Luann!

I thought about using SeeSaw, and you may see a pilot come out from us on this...Our staff had to make a hard turn to go from face-to-face relational work to building relationships through available technology. We chose to connect immediately through the most available communication method we had. Because we knew many parents had Facebook, we chose that route, and yet put specific guidelines and administrators in place to keep the focus on connecting and mentoring the learning in a private Home Learning Group. We have a specific purpose for these groups.

I do believe entering into this new way of learning and mentoring requires a large amount of empathy, relational abilities and flexibility as well as having defined what your goals are for this unprecedented time. I am choosing to see a silver lining in this cultural disruption-we can rise from this moment even better than before if we choose to look forward and respond thoughtfully. Please continue to share and let me know if you need resources to support your good work.

    For all children,
    Chris

In case it is helpful, like many other organizations at this time, Ready Rosie is offering a toolkit: Healthy at Home which includes short (couple of minutes) video models/tips in English and Spanish for families in the areas of Learning at Home, Prevention and Care, and Emotional well being. It looks like there will be a new set provided each week. (clicked on View all and saw the ones from last week.) Have used Ready Rosie videos in the past and families really liked them because they are short, modeled language and activities. (could see how to do it/preferred to print.)

Know many teachers are creating their own video models and messages, and connecting using Zoom, Seesaw, and other communication tools that allow for links to be included and sent home- so nice for personalized learning, for children to see their own teachers. Yes, nice it there is a way to have them in one place/easy to share with others.

Suggested the RR videos in case some are helpful, might be a nice supplement/enrichment to teacher created videos.

    Hi Scott,
I run a program in PA called Unconditional Child Care.  It is a free program for child care centers and families.  We are called when a center is having a behavioral difficulty with a child and is unable to solve the problem on their own.  We've been working in our area for 26 years and are involved in over 190 centers.  We have a Facebook page and we are updating it daily with activities for families, social stories about Covid-19 and resources. We are also posting a daily virtual preschool program that parents can access.  I wanted to share in case this would be helpful for you or any of your families.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

In this changing landscape, our nonprofit, the Eastern Region Association of Forest and Nature Schools, is offering free webinars about nature-based learning for teachers and parents. Here is the next one:

Forest and Nature Preschool Director's Call: Changing with the Season

Fri., 3/27/2020 at 8PM (EST) or Wed., 4/1/2020 at 4PM (EST)*

As an adminstrator, how are you adapting your program to provide support to families and your staff as a whole? How have you allocated staff time and resources to deliver meaningful care and learning from a distance? How will tuition payments and missed time off play out for your program? We will lean on each other during a networking call to share challenges and practical solutions that can help us all. Encouragement and support is a-given! This is a networking call, not a presentation, so plan to interact and share. We will cap the discussion at 30 participants.*

Here is an excerpt from an article by the Harvard Business Review (HBR), That Discomfort You're Feeling is Grief

HBR: People are feeling any number of things right now. Is it right to call some of what they're feeling grief?

Kessler: Yes, and we're feeling a number of different griefs. We feel the world has changed, and it has. We know this is temporary, but it doesn't feel that way, and we realize things will be different. Just as going to the airport is forever different from how it was before 9/11, things will change and this is the point at which they changed. The loss of normalcy; the fear of economic toll; the loss of connection. This is hitting us and we're grieving. Collectively. We are not used to this kind of collective grief in the air.

According to CSRNewswire, "The initiative features resources designed to help parents provide comfort and manage anxiety, as well as help with creating routines, fostering playful learning at home, and staying physically and mentally healthy. SesameStreet.org/caring will be regularly updated to meet the needs of families as the situation evolves.
"Around the world, young children's lives are being turned upside down, and parents and caregivers are looking for ways to give their children-and themselves-a sense of stability in this new normal," said Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, Senior Vice President for Curriculum and Content, Sesame Workshop. "But there are things parents and caregivers can do to face each day with optimism. Sesame Street is here to provide the caring adults in children's lives with the resources they need to help children, and foster their healthy development at home."
Sesame Workshop is also creating brand new content on topics like handwashing, how to cough or sneeze properly, and how taking good care of yourself means taking good care of others, which will be available in the US and globally in a wide range of languages and released in the coming weeks.
Additionally, over 110 free Sesame Street ebooks are available on all major ebook platforms.

I know we have used Zoom meetings with our parents to stay in contact with our families. Parents get to share information with teachers about things they've been doing at home, and the children get to see their friends. Ours enjoy playing show and tell, reading a book, or hide and seek during these meeting times. If doing assessments allow the parents to be involved maybe communicating through email or phone calls(even better), about what areas was being discussed in the classroom before the virus. I know our parents have been more willing to send pictures of family engagement moments, and interactions with their kiddos. We've also had parents ask questions about at home learning or what to do for anxiety and stress relief during these times. So we've been able to send resources to help in these areas. We want to continue to remind our parents that they are their child's first teacher, so they have the resources within themselves.

Thank you for valuing the mental health of your teachers at this time. Adults need time and an outlet for releasing tension, and engaging playfully with one another and their environment is a wonderful way of doing that.
If there's time for group activities, a yoga session might hit the spot. Or simply time to share and play games.  Looking within the talents of your group, what can you offer each other? Looking without, there's a plethora of free fitness activities and and meditations available online right now. Can you look up a game that no one knows, and learn to play it together?

    Hi all,

I'm a School Psychologist for district preschool programs. Over half of our families speak Spanish. I wanted to put together resources for our families to use during this challenging time, and I had to search far and wide for resources that were available in both languages. I'm sharing the site for anyone who wants to use any of the resources. Some are for my specific city and county, but all the other ones should be relevant.

I'm also open to any suggestions to be added, or corrections to be made (I used Google translate since it was harder to get translation support like I normally do during this time).

    Hope this helps some.

One of our PEACE Educators Interest Forum members has been active with some of her friends and is sharing the following resources with all of you. The values represented in the books are a wonderful fit for the PEACE Educators Interest Forum and probably for members of other interest forums.

Announcing!  "Sparklers" Book Lists for Trying Times and Earth Day

The book lists following have been created by a group of teachers and others who are passionate about discovering wonderful children's literature and making it readily available.  The Sparklers Working Group of FGC (Friends General Conference) is a group of Quakers, all who love quality children's books that help promote peace, respect, simplicity, community, stewardship, and equality.  The book lists, including links to YouTube videos of each story, are available on the QREC (Quakers for Religious Education Collaborative) website.  The links here will give you access.

Two book lists have been created to support families and children especially during this time:

    1. Books for These Trying Times:

    1. Books for Earth Day, and beyond:

Wanted to share PkTeachLeadGrow.org May's Early Learning Blog.   This month's blog is all about what early learning teachers/schools/centers can do to encourage our youngest learners (and families) to learn that is NOT screen-focused :-) Many ideas came from NAEYC's Celebration of the Week of the Young Child and align withThe Framework for Teaching's 4c: Communicating with Families.  All ideas are quick, easy family-focused activities to build up those "family learning together muscles" for this COVID19-sheltered season and summer break where learning is often lost.
Please feel free to share this blog and the aligned website, pk3TeachLeadGrow.org, (which will have 20+ new early learning videos all aligned to Framework for Teaching Components/ Clusters this May/June), with any of your early learning educators! If you or your colleagues have missed any of the previous blogs, go to "News and Events" where they are all listed!

    Rosa,
Thank you for sharing this blog - I intend to look at it. I am so with you that as we go thru this COVID-19 delay, that we need to provide children with activities at home to activate their thinking and inquiry skills, get them moving and exploring nature, developing their creativity and fine motor skills, and in general be ready to learn again when they return to school. They get enough screen time the way it is. I feel parents will help and participate with their children if they are given ideas and suggestions of what to do. Once they understand that they CAN teach their children and have the ideas of how to go about it, they will help their children. Thank you for sharing this and I will look into it.

Thank you for the resource. I use the High Scope curriculum in my classroom and High Scope has a lot of great ideas that can be utilized at home that do not require a screen. You can get a free account and access to many of the activities. We have been doing activities with our students online. Some of the hands on activities include a letter sound hunt (find something in your house that start with....), shape hunt, sorting and counting coins, reading a book and drawing a picture in response. We also did an activity with water where the children were asked to predict how many cups of water would fit into different sized containers that they had in their kitchen. I think the parents are really feeling relieved because they thought teaching their young children would be harder and daunting. Check out High Scope for some more ideas!

I wanted to share two new program series that are free and available publically on our website if they are of interest to your families or staff. Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's Arts Education teaching artists have created both videos and printable PDF's:

Creative Connections, www.TrustArts.org/CreativeConnections: offer digital learning tools created by Trust Arts Teaching Artist and cover all ages and art disciplines. These are short videos that provide extensions to encourage the engagement off the screen as well. There are two PDF activity sheets included as well to email or print and deliver to families.

Creative Curriculums, www.TrustArts.org/CreativeCurriculums: these are designed to extend students' academic learning with arts-integrated scaffolded lesson plans and a family engagement activity. These are created so that educators can lead them with their group of students or feel free to share with families to allow them to engage on their own. All of these are printable PDFs so that they can be emailed or printed and delivered.

We will continue to update both of these sites with additional content.

    Dear All,
The Asian Interest Forum is beyond thankful for many volunteers who spent countless hours on contributing to the social story project and the Social Story Center! The book has been translated into 16 languages and 5 more languages to come! Last week many teachers from the Google Child Care Center joined us to help out with translation and dissemination. Kudos to all the teachers and volunteers!

We also want to share exciting news about the new website that we created to host the social story and other resources. Due to high traffic on the previous site that made the download speed unbearable, the Social Story Center worked with several partners and now has a new site: https://socialstorycenter.com! Please visit the new site as we have added additional resources such as a customizable version of the social story that allows parents to put in their child's name and city they live in. Each child deserves to have his/her own COVID-19 social story!

Teacher Appreciation Week is next week, we also have printable thank-you cards with the main character, Bau, available for free download. Please share the site with parents.

In addition, I would like to introduce one of the Social Story Center's partner's, Focus, a charity organization focuses on nature and culture, for sponsoring the illustrations, drawings, and animation of the book. The organization is working on a series of work relate to COVID-19, they feature AIF's work for early childhood education. You can visit their site at https://www.letsfocus.org. The site also provides different resources, including greeting, cheering, and thank-you cards with the main character, for free download.

Our next goal is to find fundings to help us print and send 100,000 hard copies to children living in rural areas and hotspots. Please let us know if you are interested in joining us! Thank you and wish all of my ECE hero friends a peaceful weekend (if you can feel the difference)!

I appreciate this thread of COVID resources for families with young children, especially with ideas out there that highly inappropriate.
I've been recommending these three resources from DEY.org  https://dey.org/covid-19-resources/
~ Guidance for Supporting Young Children Through COVID-19.  This is my favorite guide.  It covers a wide range of topics, always in a supportive way, including supporting play, communicating with loved ones, establishing routines, thoughts on screen-time, and how to talk to young children. I particularly like the attractive layout and the photos of diverse families that makes it appealing to families as well as educators.
~  Dr. Susan Linn's puppet show video. Her puppet shows at NAEYC conferences have always been delightful and informative - and so is this one, in which Susan helps Audrey the Duck understand what is meant by the Corona virus, and answers Audrey's questions about why their life has changed so much. Watching this short video helps young children understand.  Just as important, I think it models for us adults how to talk to children.
~ The webinar featuring DEY's Nancy Carlsson-Paige and Kisha Reid. This hour long webinar addresses the specific concerns of teachers of young children. Kisha Reid and Nancy Carlsson-Paige, well-known educators and advocates, offer strategies to help teachers maintain connections to young students and families, encourage play-based learning, and support children's – and teachers – wellbeing during these challenging months.

    Dear All,

Sandy and I thought we could wrap up the social story project that emerged out of the work of the Asian IF and others, by the end of April. The truth is that the Social Story Center Project has evolved and just keep going! Thanks to my colleague, Sandra Perez's assistance, several teachers from Google Child Care Center got involved and help with translation. I am thrilled to share the new translation and animations below with you!

There are several social stories available and got translated into different languages, however, this one is the only one that got translated and done 100% by volunteers around the world, and many of them are NAEYC members! You can find the resources at https://socialstorycenter.com. Also, don't forget to download printable thank-you cards to work with your children to thank their teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week! How to Create a Pandemic History Book

History books are a gift to help us never forget. They are like breathing in at the focus time and then breathing out years later. By recording history we capture a point in time for future reflections.

    Daunting?

But writing a history book that accurately reflects the facts is challenging. A well-written, vetted history book takes planning and many revisions to get just right. It's a big, daunting project.

Thankfully there's another type of book that can help us capture historical events that is easier, even fun to produce-a scrapbook!

A scrapbook is like a museum on pages. It's a way to capture an important historic period of our lives through organizing and sharing artifacts of that time and of the people who experienced it. Using two dimensional objects, scrapbooks contain memory-triggers for initiating future reflection. They invite a very special kind of reading, rich with deep conversation, inquiries, and storytelling.

And they're fun to create! Scrapbooking can be a magnificent project for individuals or whole families to do together. Even small children can participate in scrapbooking. The result becomes a treasure when kids are old enough to sit down, maybe with their own children, to discuss their family's history.

    Now? Really?

During this time when we're mostly staying at home to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, many of us find ourselves with space in our days for activities such as scrapbooking. So why not capture this historic period in a creative way?

Invite everyone in the home can help make a gift to our future selves and friends. We also can collaborate with fellow quarantiners and others online to create a digital scrapbook.

Take and/or collect photos and items (like a cardboard toilet paper core) and anything else that could trigger vivid memories that help shape answers to questions like:

What did we do when we were locked inside without friends to play with?

How did we "go" to school?

What made these the "good old days?"

What made this time feel scary?

    Take Heart…

Rest assured that someday we'll all sit shoulder-to-shoulder on the sofa, delivering belly laughs with pats on the knee, kisses and hugs as we get out that pandemic scrapbook and vividly remember our personal history and sweet/sad memories of this unique time.

Dear all, please check out this heart-warming resource, Paw Paw's Home Preschool while Sheltering in Place.

Debbie LeeKeenan, a veteran NAEYC member and her husband have the good fortune to live near two of their grandchildren and have been caring for them during Shelter in Place.  They both have been providing activities for a 1.5 and a 3.5 year old which are developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive, open-ended, and can be adapted for a broader range of ages. Debbie has generously agreed to partner with the Asian Interest Forum to provide some examples of the activities to all of us. As Debbie stated, "These experiences are invitations for learning and use simple materials. They are also based on the interests of the children, encourage play, curiosity, and creativity."

Please check out the photos of in her 36-day long diary and share this resource with anyone you know who are currently staying at home with young children.  If the link doesn't work up there, you can visit,https://sandybabaece.wixsite.com/aifcovid19sip

Wishing you all a safe and healthy Mother's day weekend!

    Best,
    Sandy

Hello, Has anyone heard any information on Guidance for childcare transportation during this Covid-19 pandemic? , social distancing, What procedures should when follow when riding the bus? I've had a few other providers ask this question and there isn't much out there.

As schools across the U.S. started to close down in the wake of COVID-19, children were told that they wouldn't be going back for the foreseeable future.

While some kid might enjoy starting their summer vacation early, others miss seeing teachers and friends.

Medical students Devon Scott and Samantha Harris saw an opportunity to help.

"Kids are very curious and may be asking why they aren't at school, or why they can't hang out with their friends, or why people wear masks at grocery stores," said Scott, a medical student from Loma Linda University in California who is currently completing a research fellowship year in the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. "We wanted to add a resource to bridge the conversation gap between parents and children in an easy-to-understand way."

Check this out: If you're just beginning to get back together with children in-person, or you're still interacting online, and you're looking for a way to help children process what they've been experiencing, my colleagues at Action for Media Education, a Seattle-based nonprofit, have launched a project called the Corona Multimedia Showcase that asks, "If you could share your thoughts and feelings with others around the world, what would you create?"  It's an international celebration of the creativity of children, youth and their families during this time of a pandemic. Under the leadership of Dr. Marilyn Cohen (U of Washington Ed Prof Emeritus), they are inviting/facilitating contributions from children ages 3-19 to use art and multimedia and media literacy reflection/inquiry as a way to share their experiences of COVID-19. Entries are due by July 10. You can find all the details at coronashowcase.org. This isn't a corporate thing. They aren't doing this to collect your data or co-opt kids voices for branding purposes. It is a chance for kids to be creative and see themselves as part of a larger community.
