One of my other "hats" is Addiction/Overdose Awareness. Addiction, as defined by Surgeon General Vivik Murthy is a primary disease (like diabetes, cardio vascular etc). It often presents along with other mental health issues. I have been doing some research on the connection between early warning signs, Sensory Processing Issues and etc in the youngest of children. My goal is to raise awareness among the Early Childhood Community. Simply knowing the warning signs might help families address and/or provide coping skills to children BEFORE adolescence. Brain research shows that when youngsters experiment during adolescence the development of the prefrontal cortex is impacted.    Prefrontal Cortex = Executive Function, Impulse Control etc. If anyone has any thoughts or would like to join me in my efforts to raise awareness please contact me via email ksking425@hotmail.com. PS: addiction covers not only alcohol/drugs but also food, gambling and etc.

    Hi Karen -

Yes, I would like to be kept on the information loop.  I am an early childhood educator working closely with parents and have background in sensory integration in a former career.  Two of my grandchildren are teens and two are early childhood age now ; I would also like to pass along research to their parents.

Thank you for what you are doing.  Addiction seems to be rampant.

Wow, The response I am receiving re: early signs of addictive personalities is amazing. I have been in contact with several State Agencies (I live in CT) and will share any and all information. For the moment, my vision, to put together a comprehensive In-Service program to help ECE people understand more about addiction, co-morbidity AND provide tools/techniques for educators to pass on to the youngest of children. Remember everyone Addiction is a disease NOT a moral failing -together we can "break the silence" and help the children (families) I have attached a couple of articles.  http://healthland.time.com/2012/04/26/how-preschool-behavior-can-predict-addiction-and-problem-gambling-in-adulthood/

Ms. King, Thank you for sharing your interest. I am a teacher in the DC Public Schools in Washington, DC. I am also interested in receiving more information about the early indicators of addictive personalities.   I teach kindergarten and knowing how to help students with strategies or other forms of assistance without using drugs would be very helpful.
