  • 1.  Age Definitions

    Posted 08-14-2019 10:09 AM
    Hi everyone,
Where can I find the definitions for each age group? Specifically, infants - is it birth to 12 months, 15 months, 18 months? Toddlers? Preschool? or is it the definition you use in your own program?

    Thanks!

    Hi Shannon,

You can go the Regulations for state to get the definitions of age groups.

I have attached a copy of Massachusetts Regulations.

Don't know if this helps you.

    Best regards,

    Gina

    Hi Shannon,
NAEYC Accreditation age category definitions are below.

    Infant:  Birth to 15 months

    Toddler/Two: 12 to 36 months (1 or 2 years old)

Preschool: 30 months – 5 years (not in Kindergarten)

Kindergarten:  Kindergarten refers to children enrolled in a public or private kindergarten program that directly precedes Grade 1.

These age ranges purposefully overlap.  Children between 12 and 15 months may be categorized as either Infants or Toddler/Twos. Children between 30 and 36 months may be categorized as either Toddler/Twos or Preschoolers. If a class includes children whose ages range beyond the overlapping portion of two age categories, then the class is a mixed age class.

Many school systems now enroll children aged 3 or 4 years old in classes labeled "kindergarten" that encompass preschool curriculum, not traditional kindergarten curriculum directly preceding assignment to Grade 1. Those classes all fall within the preschool age category.

    I hope this helps.

    Hello,

Infant age differs program and state wise. Family Child Care Homes in California - it  is 0-24 mths while in some of the other states it is not!!
We need to standardize the ratios based on NAEYC accreditation definition for centers and FCC homes.

    Thanks,

Can you explain a little about the school age ? I understand if  our after school program has more than half of the kids in kindergarten we will be assessed.  For school age, I thought that was a separate accreditation (a pilot?).  We have 17 children in after school (5K-3rd grade) and a summer school age program that is 3 months only.  I just would like to know if they are required to have portfolios no matter what for school age (the rest of the Center is infants through 4 years olds) or if it is optional (unless we have half of our after school program with kindergartners).  Thank you.

    Hi Shannon,
You can see how the CDC defines the age/ developmental  levels it at the link below. The Center for Disease Control also has wonderful, one sheet posters the show typical milestones in development that can be printed out in both English and Spanish for parents.Hope this helps.
