I think that all early childhood educators should get vaccinated it will help reduce the  spread of Covid-19 and get us back to teaching and doing the actives with love to do with kids quicker.

As a daycare provider, I believe educators should get the vaccine. Any child under the age of 12 years old whose not required to get the vaccine, can still come in contact with an older sibling or family member who hasn't been vaccinated,  in my opinion.  I rather be safe than sorry.

    Hi Milagros,
Here in LA County we advocated hard to be in the early eligible group as essential workers.  Some of us have risked our health the entire time of the oandemic by keeping our onsite programs open without interruption.  Many worked through the roller coaster of unknowns and changing protocols as well as learning to care & teach through Zoom.  I feel that getting vaccinated is the respectful choice: respectful of the best available science, respectful of one's bodily needs, respectful of the health of one's family, respectful of the health of the unvaccinated children in our care, respectful of our program's community including fellow staff onsite as well as the children's families, respectful of the health of our wider community where we work and live, and, as I explained at the start, respectful of the time and effort colleagues in our sector have put in to advocate for vaccines to be readily available to us.  By respect I also mean care.  Care is our middle name :-)
There's just a tiny percentage of people who, based on sound medical advice, would choose against vaccination and it's possible although unlikely within that tiny group there are actively working early care teachers.

    Leila,

Thank you for sharing.  I hate to say this, but when our children started getting the virus or worst, die then our governor, etc. Will begin to see how important it is to get  the vaccine. I'm in Texas and Hospitals in Houston is full and tents are located on the outside of the hospital.  And, still some people say it's a hoax. All I can say, is take plenty pictures of your children and love ones just in case. Again, just my opinion

    Laila,

Thank you for your comment...as a  daycare provider, I echo with you. I  had both vaccine not just for me and my family,  but to help protect the children in my care. I have parents who are nurses  who quit or retired from the hospital.  Why, because the more they pushed the vaccine to their patients,  the more the patients pushed back. This may sound cold, but God did say he's going home to prepare a place for us, and if I go...I will return.

With that said,  stop preaching to them and let God do his thing, in my opinion. I applauded all people in the medical field to keep up the good work,  I pray for each and everyone of you daily. Remember God got this...take care and God bless.

Absolutely, 100%, how better to protect children who can't get the vaccine themselves.

To hesitant people who think the vaccine was rushed and is too untested, vaccination is an old science we have been using for a very long time.  Edward Jenner is considered the founder of vaccinology. In 1796, he inoculated a 13 year-old-boy with vaccinia virus (cowpox), and demonstrated immunity to smallpox. In
1798, the first smallpox vaccine was developed.
We have the means to end this pandemic, we need the will.

    Vicki,
I agree with you.  I take the flu shot every year..just in case I get the flu...it want effect me as much. I took both vaccine after my 24 year old niece died from covid.  That was in July 2020..just think how bad things are now with delta virus? I will continue to pray for good people like you and others who care about everyone especially our children.  God can stop this but why...the world is in a bad place right now. And, God isn't happy in my opinion.

All teachers should be required to be vaccinated unless they have a medical condition that dictates otherwise documented by a doctor. I also think vaccination should be required of all children as the data now is beginning to show the efficacy of the COVID vaccines. Hopefully, by some time in September/October, children between 12 and 15 will be required to be vaccinated in order to go to school, and that soon after that, once the vaccine is permitted for the younger children, I hope it will be required just as many other vaccines are mandated.

My grandchildren are 12 and older. They are vaccinated but they still wear masks under certain circumstances

Just a point, the mask requirement, which should be mandatory, is not going away because so many have not been vaccinated (fear or misinformation???) that we cannot be certain that we are fully protected from the Delta variant. On the other hand, the data shows that if you are vaccinated and develop a breakthrough COVID virus, you almost certainly will not end up in the hospital or on a ventilator or dead.

Why would you be against mandating vaccination? Of course, as with all vaccinations, some are exempt because of medical conditions but I do not understand your position.

Do you feel the same way about masks?

I also agree that it should not be mandated. One of the biggest things people enjoy in this country is the freedom of choice. If we force people who are not comfortable to be injected with something, our freedom is lost. There are no mandates on any other vaccine currently out there, likely for this reason among others.

As for your question regarding masks, yes that has been mandated, but it hasn't really been enforced has it? People are walking into buildings unmasked all the time and no one is asking for their vaccination papers, because that violated HIPPA, and I doubt businesses like grocery and department stores want to put their employees into such a confrontational situation.

Vicki, you mentioned that we have had vaccines for many years and while that is true, the process used to create this particular vaccine was not the same. Similarly, the information we are provided regarding the vaccine is only the information that the governing bodies pushing the vaccine want us to know. There have been many negative effects experienced by those who received the vaccine. We should not require a person to subject themselves to that just because there is not yet any obvious medical reason not to. We also have no idea what the side effects will be in years to come. There are side effects to well used vaccines, as well, so something as new as this is likely to have unforeseen consequences.

Nora, you mentioned the Delta variant, but it has already been established that the current vaccines do not protect against that strain anyway.

Though I do not want to get strongly political, what I will say is that we have to remember that the Federal government is a corporation. Corporations sell ideas and products and this particularly entity especially does so to create the society they desire. That goes beyond us being healthy and safe. Whether or not you "trust" the government and all they tell you, at the end of the day, it is not the way of this country to require specific lifestyle choices. They can convince you, sure, but they can't force you. If they try to force anything, vaccines or otherwise, many people will rebel under the banner of freedom of choice and it would be their right to do so.

Some of you may scoff at this and it is okay that you have chosen to accept what is being sold to you, but you cannot expect everyone to feel the same way that you do. That is not how our society works, though I understand there are people who believe it should. We have already established this with religious and cultural affiliations. However, if you are the type of person who believes everyone should be exactly like you, child care may not be the field for you, as children and families have many differences that should all be respected. This, too, has also been well established.

As is probably clear, to answer the original question, it should be up to the child care professional to make that decision for themselves and they shouldn't have to share whether or not they have and why or why not with anyone, unless they so choose. When is the last time you asked someone if they were vaccinated for polio or smallpox? If they got their tetanus shot? We do not ask the educators caring for our children these questions, likely because these are not as large a point of concern as COVID-19 is right now, but they once were and I highly doubt every single person in the country received those vaccines when it was rampant and yet, we don't see it anymore now, or at least not often. My point is, if we do ask about vaccines, then we do not ask about vaccines, period. It's not really any of our business what other people are choosing to do with their bodies. I suppose that is a whole other conversation, though, as that is a topic that has been struggled with among civilians for decades, especially in regard to women.

Thank you to Milagros for asking the question and to all of you for having a discussion.

    Dear Samantha:

I am going to address your thoughts and questions mainly  inside of your response.

Just to let you know in advance, I am old enough to have had to take the Smallpox vaccination back in the day because Smallpox was not eradicated from the world at that time. I could not travel without a Smallpox vaccination. Vaccination has eliminated this terrible disfiguring disease from the world. As for Polio, I was a participant in the experiment to test the efficacy of the Polio vaccine. My parents and over 54,000 or so other parents clamored to get their children vaccinated against Polio in the trial because children were dying and becoming permanently paralyzed from the disease. I remember the fear that my parents had about this disease. Polio is not fully eradicated the way that Smallpox is, and Polio vaccination is required for children - mandated - along with many other vaccinations in order to attend public school and daycare/early childhood centers, at least I know that is the case in NY and NJ.

Another interesting story for you to mull over is the story of my doctor who contracted Polio at age 4 just prior to the development of the vaccine. She ended up in an iron lung and was never able to use her legs again. She attended medical school in a wheelchair and whizzed around the hospital in it. But the upshot is that the disease - the Polio - ultimately killed her because the damage to the lungs they found reasserts itself. In her 30s, she died from an asthma attack related to her earlier Polio illness.

And, yes, you are right, though that there is always a risk with everything we do or don't do.

Nora, you mentioned the Delta variant, but it has already been established that the current vaccines do not protect against that strain anyway.

I do a lot of reading about the Delta variant and I listen to the doctors and scientists who are urging all of us for the sake of all of us to get the vaccine. I have seen the statistics of those coming down with the Delta variant and nearly 100% of those who become infected have not been vaccinated, and those who have a breakthrough infection have been in close quarters with those who are unvaccinated and perhaps not wearing masks. The statistics also show that if you if you are vaccinated, the chances of ending up in the hospital or worse dying are extremely low, less than 1%. Also, many of those who somehow contract the Delta variant and were vaccinated often have underlying medical conditions, which means their immune response is lower.

Clearly, you do not trust the science and think that you are being sold something that may kill you. Are there side effects to vaccines? Yes, there are - even to the flu shot. This is not about trusting the government - even the Trump administration was pushing for this vaccine and he took it as soon as he could after he became ill enough to end up in the hospital. This is about science. Over 600,000 Americans have died from Covid.

This is not about being sold a "bill of goods" by the government or wanting "everyone to feel the same way" I do. And, clearly, everyone does not feel the same way I do. Your response is an example of that. And that is fine.

There are exemptions for vaccines on religious grounds, not cultural affiliations. There are exemptions to having to get vaccinations on medical grounds - not all people should be vaccinated. It depends on their medical status.

I think you got a little too political here.Taking a vaccine has nothing to do with believing that everyone should be "like me" and I resent your implication. I think that you should think about your stand and its implications for the end of this Pandemic or at least getting it to the level where it is more like the flu.  I respect the cultural backgrounds of the families that attended the early childhood center in which I was a Director, a center that was incredibly diverse culturally, religiously, and racially, but we followed the rules for NJ, which required all children in order to attend our center to be vaccinated against a variety of diseases unless they had a religious or medical exemption. I also know that some of the families used the religious exemptions "illegally" to prevent their children from being vaccinated - they were not a part of a religious group that promoted that belief but I was not able to question the request for exemption.

I think your stand sounds more political than science-based. I wish you luck. I hope that at the very least, you are mandating masks so that everyone who comes into your center has some protection.

Thank you for your thorough response and information. I appreciate you taking the time to share. I also apologize if I offended you, or anyone, it was not my intention.

You are quite right that I am untrusting and my stand is somewhat political. I find do not believe "the science" to be wholly separate from politics, both at a government level and a societal one. I do, however, feel that I my statements were still my own beliefs, rather than anything about the politics specifically.

I also want to be clear that I did not state I believe the vaccine will kill me, necessarily, I simply stated that there are known and unknown effects with which I personally am not comfortable. I also did not state that taking the vaccine is related to wanting others to view the world the same way you do, rather the belief that everyone should have to

Your examples of the families "illegally" using religious affiliations appears to me to be exactly what I am talking about when I say that people do not want to be forced into something. They felt they had to lie, because they did not feel comfortable vaccinating their children, but they felt they would be forced to otherwise.

There is so much more I could say, but as you have stated, it can be too political and this is not necessarily the place for that. Still, the question was asked and I also wanted to acknowledge that I saw your post and read it multiple times. Thank you again.

    Dear Samantha:

The instance that I cited about a family lying about their religious beliefs to avoid vaccinating their daughter goes further than you know. This family vaccinated their son and for some reason decided that they would not vaccinate their daughter, the younger of their two children. They had no explanation for this but the law stipulated that we had to accept the religious exemption.

Is it possible that your beliefs are being driven by the media to which you are exposed? If you hear over and over misinformation about vaccines, there is a good chance that you will develop a belief that something really bad will happen to you if you get vaccinated. But I do not know about you or what has driven you to the beliefs you have, but I have a close friend whose husband died of COVID early in the pandemic, which was devastating to their family. My friend and her daughter were also sick but managed to recover without hospitalization or a ventilator. She blames the administration in charge at that time, very early in the pandemic, for not alerting all of us to how bad this virus was so that we could protect ourselves.

You really should read the science and listen to the doctors and the other medical personnel who have worked through this terrible time and watched people die terrible deaths with awful aftereffects on families. There are many children now left without parents. This is not about choice but the good of the entire community. We are supposed to be our "brothers' keeper" and take care that we do not harm others in the name of "freedom of choice". There are many laws out there that have been passed in order to protect the greater public. To me, that is a good thing.

For a governor to prohibit asking for masking in a school to protect both the teachers and the children, to me, is chilling and extremely upsetting. Now, some of the governors of states that have not supported vaccination are pleading with their citizens to get vaccinated for the public good. The hospitals are full up with folks with Covid.

I am saddened that public health has become a political football and that so much misinformation is out there that is convincing so many people not to get vaccinated. People  with Covid in many Southern and some Midwestern states are filling up the hospitals, and this now includes children. This is a very sad situation.

    Hello Everyone!
Thank You Nora! Your comments were incredibly clear. I believe teachers need to be vaxed to teach in front of children who are not able to get vaccinated. The numbers are growing the Delta V is among us. Some schools in the south already virtual. Our youngest of students will be academically behind especially those who can’t afford to send their children to affluent schools. Be Safe Be Well and do the right thing with empathy within our ♥️.

I have not yet read all the responses re mask and vaccine use/mandates but I find some responses surprising from members of a profession that cares about children and families.

    THIS IS SARCASM:
I own a car so I have freedom and a RIGHT to drive a car with no government interference.  Therefore, I will no longer renew my driver's license.  I will no longer fasten a seat belt.  I may find keeping my car in safe-to-drive condition just too much trouble.  I will drive wherever and whenever I want to drive and ignore all road and weather conditions.  I will ignore all speed limits and stop signs.  I will drive through traffic lights if seems safe to ME.  I will talk on the phone and/or eat and drink while I drive.  I will have a passenger to have someone to talk with as I drive and, because it is polite in a conversation, I will frequently turn my head to face my passenger as we talk.  Would you like to be my passenger?  Or drive yourself in my vicinity?

THESE ARE MEMORIES:  When I was an infant one or more of my older siblings were diagnosed with scarlet fever.  Our house had an official sign on the front door warning others we were quarantined.  My father had to move out of the house so he could go to work.  We had groceries delivered to our doorstep and only when the deliverer left, could a member of my family go out to bring in the groceries.  Yes, I am OLD!

I had "red measles" as a very young child and remember hating to be kept in a dark room while I recovered because those measles and normal lighting in a room could harm your eyes.  I had the "other" measles as a teenager.  I had been at a party and when I came home I told my parents a friend had to call her parents and go home from the party because she broke out with those measles.  My parents told me to go look in the mirror.  Yes, I along with many others were out of school for the required time.  I had the chicken pox in first grade and did not like having to stay home on the day of our Valentine's Day Party.  No valentines for me that year.  I remember when many of my classmates in third or fourth grade were out of school because they had whooping cough.  Yes, I did get a smallpox vaccination for many years.  I remember needing to have an up-to-date smallpox vaccination to travel out of our country and return.  I remember our local swimming pool was closed due to polio.  When I was in college, there was a requirement to spend a couple of days in places unfamiliar to me for observation and participation in programs for children.  I chose a children's hospital for one day and still remember two siblings with polio and both in iron lungs.  During my early days of teaching I was delighted to line up with others in my community on a weekend to get our sugar cube polio vaccinations.  I have known others for whom the vaccine came too late.

I used to tell my college students that what I said and what they would read might be out-of-date in the future and they would need to "keep up" with newly discovered information.  My favorite example was to say I was so old I remembered learning in early school days that there were 92 elements.  I remember later learning there were 96 and then 98 and by the time I was in college chemistry classes, the periodic table listed 106 elements.  How many are there now?  Using scientific methods can help us learn new things and it may be beneficial to us and others to use current science information to live better lives or even to live at all.

You do realize the smallpox, polio, etc were not viruses like the Covid / Delta that's how we could eradicate them through vaccines. The Covid / Delta is a virus similar to the flu it morphs itself, we are not going to be able to take an immunization and be one, two or three and done like we did for those diseases. We will have to continue to take shots just like we do for the flu, pneumonia, etc.

    Dear Paula:

I do not know where you are getting your information but it is misinformation. Both polio and smallpox are viruses, as is the flu, and so is Covid.

Smallpox has virtually been eradicated because of vaccines that were mandated. I could not travel overseas unless I could show that I had been vaccinated for Smallpox when I was in my 20s. Polio, although not eradicated, is rare. It is rare because the vaccination for the Polio virus is mandated for children. I was a young child in the big trial testing for the efficacy of the polio vaccine. Parents were so terrified of polio (its death rate and side effects - many children ended up in wheelchairs with lung problems that plagued them their whole lives) that tens of thousands of parents entered their children in the trial. Some of us got the real deal (I was lucky enough to be one of those who received the real vaccine, not a placebo, and were, therefore, vaccinated). The review of the trial led to mandating the vaccine for all children unless there was a medical reason to avoid it.

Covid/Delta is not like the flu. It is far more virulent. Masks can help curb the spread but the best way to end all this is with a vaccine, widely available since the winter for all adults (unless medically not recommended because of underlying issues) and now to all children 12 and up. And yes, we may have to take vaccinations over the long term because viruses can mutate (change), that is how we got the Delta variant.

Please, you are a leader in your congregation. Do what is true and helpful for your parishioners and the young children.

Its funny to me cause vaccine for "diseases" you say alot but FYI covid is a virus that is why vaccine that are created to treat disease won't work. Also flu shot is the flu dead. Covid vaccine is made of lipids that should not enter human DNA

Please read the info from the CDC. I am not sure that I understood what you were writing but it sounded as though you were saying that the COVID vaccines can enter your DNA. The vaccine for COVID is different than the vaccine for the flu and some other diseases. They are not made of dead or partially dead viruses.

    What does COVID-19 stand for?

'CO' stands for corona, 'VI' for virus, and 'D' for disease.

I strongly believe that all Educators should be vaccinated. Children under 12 cannot be vaccinated against this deadly virus. If you have ever seen a young child struggling to breathe or even worse on a ventilator you would get vaccinated.

Also as Educators you have educated yourself in your field to be someone parents, ECE professors/professionals, and your co-Educators trust - do not spread misinformation.  Science is one of the fields of study as educators we invested in to attain our degree, certification, &/or Child Development Associate. You cannot go back, if the misinformation you shared about this life altering & deadly virus is taken as truth only for that family to find out in a manner (sickness or worse) you were incorrect.

    Hello Everyone,
Misinformation about the Covid-19 is not only scary but harmful to the children we guide. Children are now being affected due to the lack of people doing the right thing for our communities and human kind. Learn Science look at the stats compare them and extend your scientific research to be better informed. Look at Johns Hopkins, NYU Medical center, Yale & Harvard Child Development Institute. Once you have done ur research gather all info and clearly make a sound decision. I have a B.S in Child Development this has helped me to be completely open minded when guiding our children during these difficult times. Misinformation has no place in this important forum as we see ourselves as well informed educators.❤️🌞

Dr. Krieger, I appreciate your well-thought-out response. If so many people refuse to get vaccinated, there is a good chance we could see an even more dangerous variant arise. This is about science. The virus doesn't care about politics.  It's just looking for hosts so it can replicate.

Dawn, It does work: vaccinated people are far, far less likely to end up hospitalized or die than unvaccinated. Also, variants are generated in places with uncontrolled spread - places with low levels of masking and vaccinated people.

Well actually there are limits on our freedom of choice; we don't have the freedom to choose to hurt other people in life-threatening ways, although of course we all do this to some degree daily since it's always been this way - put others down as the only we see way to elevate ourselves (the myth of the zero sum game).  But this doesn't mean we shouldn't be finding ways as a society to be less harmful to one another.

We (dominant white folks) can learn from cultures that survive by and are satisfied to be giving what their community needs to do well.  "American" freedom of choice can become a dangerous weapon in the hands of self-serving individuals.  We're learning this the hard way.  But we can do better!

re: vaccine mandates in general, to work in this field we are already mandated to get a couple of specific vaccines, so some believe the COVID vaccine would be ok to add to that list.  No one has advocated for preventing legitimate medical disabilities to exempt a person.

This is such a controversial topic. I am affiliated with a University and they are requiring employees to be vaccinated, but then there are three different exemptions, so really they aren't. I don't think it's a HIPAA violation to ask people if they're vaccinated. I think that's usually refers to a doctor sharing your medical information . And one of the big reasons we don't see smallpox or polio, is that people DID get vaccinated against those diseases. They didn't just vanished by themselves.
I know for me a big concern is the Delta variant.  We didn't do home visits last year, but that's the direction we're headed so far. I am uncomfortable going into homes, especially since I take care of my elderly mother every weekend, & I don't want to expose her to any illness.  I understand I can still get Covid, even after being vaccinated, I'm less likely to be hospitalized or die.

Please don't see vaccines as solely affecting the individual getting vaccinated.  Of course everyone should be concerned with unknown future side effects, which is why we need to rely on the best available science of our day and not on unschooled speculators.  Those getting vaccinated are concerned too - with the side effects currently.  And side effects to the individual getting the vaccine are infinitesimal compared to the effects to their continued good health and the health of the community.  I'm all for a careful scrutiny of cause and effect - right?  Look again to reputably published statistics that overwhelmingly point to a single rational decision.  I don't write this to insult or offend anyone, but for goodness sake TIME is of the essence to prevent the downward spiral of increased infections.  Others have contributed here more persuasively than I, and thank you for the time to do so.  Perhaps at this point there might be more folks on the forum who would share how they thenselves shifted their perspective on this, to model that one can learn more info to form a more informed opinion.

Since the onset of the latest surge in COVID nationwide due to the highly transmissible Delta variant, NAEYC has received requests from families and ECE professionals to provide recommendations or directives to NAEYC-accredited programs on COVID precautions.

NAEYC's vision is that all young children thrive and learn in a society dedicated to ensuring they reach their full potential. To that end, NAEYC encourages all providers to seek and follow current, science-based recommendations for maintaining healthy environments for children and staff in early education settings.

We at NAEYC look to the following trusted sources for COVID-related recommendations:

While NAEYC's Early Learning Program Accreditation system recognizes excellence in program practices. We urge all members, educators and early learning professionals to make practice decisions consistent with the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct for our profession.

We appreciate everyone's input into this discussion and hope to provide a space through Hello for early childhood professionals to discuss matters related to their work. For this community of members, there will be times of disagreement and agreement, throughout those times we encourage everyone to be mindful of how your voice affects others in this community. Please refer to our Code of Conduct as guidance. You are clearly getting your information from non-science sites and people. I hope, for your sake and the sake of your children and whatever children you work with, that you do not get sick and cause many others to get sick and potentially die because you do not want to get vaccinated.

I would love to see where you are getting your numbers about COVID and vaccinations from for your town of Salem, Oregon. The CDC knows that if you have underlying health issues or are immunocompromised due to cancer treatment, or have had an organ transplant, you are more at risk for the virus, vaccinated or not, but much more susceptible if you are not vaccinated at all.

If you read this article from the newspaper in your State, you will see that your county has a lot of breakthrough infections: https://www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/local/coronavirus/2021/08/06/oregon-covid-19-update-percentage-breakthrough-cases-grows-lower-rate-than-unvaccinated/5507123001/

"During July, 19% of diagnosed COVID cases, and 9% of COVID deaths, were in fully vaccinated Oregonians.

In June, 8% of cases, and 6% of deaths, were in fully vaccinated Oregonians.

"As COVID-19 cases have increased across Oregon, vaccine breakthrough cases have also increased but at a much lower rate than in the unvaccinated," OHA said in its report.

"The rate of COVID-19 cases among unvaccinated individuals at the end of July is approximately five times the rate of COVID-19 cases among fully vaccinated individuals," the report concluded."

". . .Meanwhile, a new study from the CDC supports the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines against severe infection and hospitalization.

The study tracked hospitalized COVID-19 patients aged 65 and older in 13 states between Feb. 1 and April 30.

In Oregon, it included all hospitals in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties.

The study showed the two-dose Pfizer and Moderna vaccines reduced the risk of hospitalization by 96% and the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine reduced the risk of hospitalization by 84% in adults 65-74 years old.

Among adults 75 and older, vaccines reduced the risk of hospitalization by 91% for Pfizer, 96% for Moderna, and 85% for Johnson & Johnson.

A previous study released by the CDC reported similar results.

"This most recent report is consistent with what we've experienced here in Oregon. These credible sources all show that the best way to avoid serious illness and death from COVID-19 is to get vaccinated," said Dr. Melissa Sutton, OHA's medical director of respiratory viral pathogens.

This is our  Philosophy and Policy around vaccinations here at our school.

    Community Immunity:

Parkside Community Preschool fully embraces the belief that vaccines will prevent the outbreak of disease and save lives.  This is commonly referred to as Herd or Community Immunity.  When a critical portion of a community is immunized against a contagious disease, most members of the community are protected against that disease because there is little opportunity for outbreak.  Even those who are not eligible for certain vaccines ~ such as infants, pregnant women, or immune-compromised individuals ~ get some protection because the spread of contagious disease is contained.  The principle of community immunity applies to control of a variety of contagious diseases including influenza, measles, mumps, rotavirus, and pneumococcal disease.

Oregon State Law requires that schools publish both the county's immunization rates and our individual school rates.  They will be made available to parents twice each year.

    Immunizations:

A completed up-to-date immunization record must be submitted upon enrollment as per Oregon State Law.  Each child needs to have an up-to-date immunization record.  The Director uses Oregon Immunization Alert System to audit immunization records annually.  Children whose files are not current will not be enrolled at Parkside Community Preschool without a medical exemption. Parkside Community Preschool does not recognize religious exemptions for Immunizations.

Because of our Philosophy we also require all teachers to have the Covid-19 Vaccine.
Yes they still have the freedom to chose to not get the vaccine, but that also means they have decided to find a new job.
And Parents still have the choice to not vaccinate their children and that choice means they will have to find a new school.

Bottom line is requiring a vaccine is not a loss of any sort of freedom, you just have to make choices on what is important to you and your family. If being unvaccinated is where you find the importance you should probably chose another career field.

    Hi Dawn Kritz,
Thank you for sharing that it's always helpful to me to see how other programs communicate.
I have one comment and that is that in fact a person's obstetrician imore likely would recommend that a pregnant woman get vaccinated against COVID-19 than not, and the same for many immuno-compromised people, who are in fact, generally, the first eligible for vaccines.  None of what I wrote should be interpreted as an approach to promote universal COVID vaccination in 100% of our U.S. population, but just, as I've previously written, that the number of people whose individual circumstances mean they should avoid getting vaccinated is infinitesimal- and far from the double digit percentage of currently unvaccinated.  Masses of people still need to face the factual realities of how viruses spread, that viruses cause everything from mild flu to serious diseases.  And the coronavirus causes the serious disease: COVID-19

    Hi Friends,

I wanted to share that New York State Ed Dept just released guidance. They seem to be deferring a statewide requirement of vaccines and are making counties decide on requirements while pushing CDC recommendations. Unfortunate in my view. Now 64 NY Counties have to do the work instead of one state decision.

Anyway, here's the info for NYS programs that may be affected   http://www.nysed.gov/coronavirus

I would simply urge others to educate themselves on the science, the studies, and facts and to avoid getting information solely from social media and reported anecdotes. Keep in mind that there is huge evidence that Russia, China and other countries have been creating negative social media stories and conspiracy theories in an effort to create chaos in America. Colleagues please QUESTION what you're told from unreliable sources and CHOOSE YOUR SOURCES of info carefully. Thank you all who are contributing to creating a sane society in which people are getting more educated on how to think critically and be very careful in how they evaluate information. I truly believe that the incredible spread of misinformation is a tremendous threat to our American Democracy at this time.

I hope everyone masks up and gets the vaccine to avoid dying of Covid 19. Sadly, our extended family has had several deaths over this past year from Covid, one from an aunt who was tired of staying home and went out once to a market. She got the virus and died a week later.

Not to simplify the ongoing debate over the COVID vaccine but as a private business providing early education to children the decision was made in early 2021 that our Center would require the vaccine in order to work as an early educator.  The immunization policy was written by the Center attorney to ensure that the Center was not in violation of any employment laws.   If you choose not to be vaccinated against COVID this Center is not the place for you to work.  As a side bar all the early educators that were here in early 2021 remain on staff today.

I don't believe anyone should be required to have the vaccine. I feel like people don't realize that being vaccinated does nothing to decrease your chances of getting or spreading a virus. The vaccination helps you to fight the virus if you actually get it. I feel like too many people think that the vaccine is going to prevent them from getting covid and they think the unvaccinated people are the reason they got it when really it is because people think they are immune to the virus because they got the vaccine...

Every illness for which we have a vaccine has universal signs that we can see with the naked eye: measles, chicken pox, small pox, pertussis, polio, mumps, etc. Even the flu and pneumonia strains have some universal signs.

With COVID, on the other hand, we have a virus a) that may infect a person but they have no symptoms; b) the person may spread this virus for which they have no symptoms to others; and c) the newly-infected may test positive but not have so much as a cough -- or they might have cold, flu, or pneumonia symptoms (for which we already have vaccines, where applicable).

For COVID, we also have available a vaccine, even though this is a largely asymptomatic virus and the vaccine is currently authorized for emergency use only.

With the above said, where is the logic in making the COVID shot mandatory?
    Do you even hear yourself?
    What happened to medical privacy?
What happened to "ask your doctor if [blank] is right for you"?
When did every Tom, Dick, Harry, Larry, Daryl, and Daryl become medical experts?

Thank you to all of you who have shared your thoughts, policies, or state guidance. I would echo the importance of getting information from reputable, scientific sources rather than social media, general media, or anecdotal one-offs.  I would also encourage the view that this is a health crisis rather than an infringement of rights.

I wanted to speak directly to the ongoing concern about the effects of the vaccine.  While it is true that we cannot know the effects several years down the road, one of the fundamental effects that we know is not a part of the vaccine is death. As the numbers climb and more cases, breakthrough or not, appear, the overwhelming majority (85% or greater in most areas) are in those who are unvaccinated, and the fatality rates are even greater when compared with the vaccinated. And yes, some vaccine recipients have suffered uncomfortable or unexpected side effects, but in Louisiana, for example, over two million doses have been administered, and only 8 people had serious complications, all of whom recovered from the effects without long-term consequences.  On the other hand, 11,000 people have died from COVID in our state and we are in the midst of a spike greater than at any time during the pandemic and still show less than a 40% vaccination rate state-wide.

As several people have said, this should not be a political issue, and I fear that those who disagree politically are using this health crisis as a forum for airing discontent for other, non-related beefs.  At stake now is the safety and welfare of children.  Enough time has passed to see both the efficacy and safety of the vaccines, so the questions about the timeline of research, the uncertainty of the side effects, or the impact on disease spread are without merit. It is interesting that those who are speaking the loudest of freedom are so willing to put their neighbors' freedom in jeopardy. If you do not believe or trust in the governmental messaging, then it is your responsibility to seek information from those who know best.

Obviously, the question of vaccinating vs. non-vaccinating is, for me, a non-question, but even if you are fervently on the other side, I could respect that decision if it were paired with personal responsibility.  You are free, as many say, to not take the vaccine, but you are not free to flaunt the mask mandates, cry foul when you are turned away from public places or employment opportunities, or choose to behave in a manner that puts others at risk. One should also not be surprised when the virus continues to spread unabated.  As we know all too well in my area, if the overtopping of the levees is not controlled, no one should be shocked when Lake Ponchartrain ends up in your yard! The bottom line is that private businesses are free to make decisions that will best serve their communities and none of these decisions are made easily!  Governmental bodies are also authorized to make decisions for the greater good based on reliable scientific information from those far more qualified than any of us or any of them. Even if citizens disagree, acting in the interest of the greater good is part of the covenant that we assume as a member of a community.

Mask up. Be smart. Choose your information with discernment.

As an early childhood educator in a private school we remained mask-free for all of our children last year (although teachers were masked). One of our friend's young adult son was afflicted with myocarditis and had a heart transplant following his vaccine. My SIL is still on steroids because she has a severe case of a pharmaceutical induced skin infection following her vaccine and someone else suffered a miscarriage following her vaccine. I'm not anti-vac, I'm just concerned when things stop making sense. I had covid last year and have been tested for antibodies which I have. So I remain on the side of- do not mandate.

    Dear Kristine,

That's good that you have antibodies, and may that prevent you from getting a bad case of the disease (COVID).  A mandate within an institution, or for profit or non profit EC center would still consider specific exceptions/exemptions.

As to your friend who miscarried, and I don't want to sound insensitive, but would you agree it's possible that, regardless of the timing of the tragedy post-vaccine that there could have been another cause?  After all, About 10 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. But the actual number is likely higher because many miscarriages occur so early in pregnancy that a woman doesn't realize she's pregnant.  I'm not saying it's unbelievable that the vaccine had that effect, but simply that perhaps there were additional or other factors on that.  And lastly, I wish there were no side effects at all, but believe one must weigh the severity and duration of a side effect against the severity and duration of a side effect of having the long version of the disease.  Please don't read my comments as minimizing what your relatives/friends experienced, but I think it helps to keep anecdotes in perspective, and to look at the statistics to make a sound choice, while the choice is still in one's hands to make.

As you only address the miscarriage, I will tell you she was 7 months pregnant. I’m just giving the other side- no one should expect anyone in these situations to vaccinate. I can go on regarding treatments that are being ignored but I’m only answering the question. We should not mandate.

    Maybe off-topic?

I've always believed that any course of medical treatment a person decides on should be a decision made between that patient and his or her medical provider. Neither politicians, the media, nor famous people should even try to have the influence they currently have when it comes to our health and safety. It isn't their arena.

That's accurate generally speaking, but not when it comes to a contagious illness and working with a vulnerable population. We have to get tested for TB - which includes an injection. We have to prove immunity to Measles - which includes, for the overwhelming majority of people, is an injection/vaccination. You have the right to not do anything to prevent yourself from having a contagious illness; you don't have the right to come to work and exhale that sickness on children and coworkers.

Would anyone from this community be willing to share their current covid/pandemic and/or vaccination policies?  Regardless of your stance on the issue?  It would be so great to share examples and offer an opportunity to help everyone improve their own policies.

    Hello,

NAEYC staff have been following the recent threads on COVID-related discussion carefully and would like to remind our members and participants in HELLO that while we encourage lively and even passionate debate between members, this forum is expected to be civil. Political discussions are not allowed on HELLO and these recent COVID-related discussions have demonstrated the need for expanded guidelines about what is and is not allowed on this platform.

The focus of this list is discussion and dialogue around specific topics in early education. While these discussions clearly impact and influence early childhood education, this is not a forum to argue about science, and NAEYC staff are not expert scientists with the capacity to review each and every post for what constitutes misinformation. We look to the following trusted sources for COVID-related recommendations:

With respect to COVID-related discussion on HELLO, which includes masking and vaccines, we are adding the following guidelines:

    • People MAY express their views, questions, concerns, agreements, disagreements about what our federal, state, and local governments, school districts, and programs are planning, considering, implementing to ensure a safe early education experience for students, teachers and staff.
    • People MAY NOT post negative or positive comments directly about the science behind the vaccines, masks, etc.

Those who want to debate the science itself with decision-makers can and are encouraged to express their views with them directly but not on HELLO; those who want to debate the impact of policies on educators, families, and students are welcome to do so here. We realize this can be a difficult line to follow, but are attempting to be fair and not shut down important discussions between members.

Again, from our organizational perspective, we urge all members, educators, and early learning professionals to make practice decisions consistent with the public health expertise and guidelines of the CDC and the AAP, and in keeping with the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct for our profession, and we appreciate the robust discussion and passion of the early childhood educators in our communities.

    Thank you,
