Hi! I am curious if anyone has shared a new policy or statement on what their center is doing in the face of this new virus? If so, will you share?
I know if it's just a virus, but the unknown is scary. I know all usual precautions of hygiene should be taken. Just curious what is being stated to your families.
    Thanks!

    Sent on January 24th:

The Health Department has now  established a call center for novel coronavirus for the general public: 408-885-3980.

They now have a webpage for the public with general recommendations and FAQs: www.sccgov.org/sites/phd/DiseaseInformation/novel-coronavirus/Pages/home.aspx.

Attached are the FAQs (short and long versions).

I will be sending out information as it is given to me.

As you all know, there is currently a worldwide concern regarding the Coronavirus.  While there is not a rampant outbreak of this disease in our area, this is a great time to remember that the number one thing we can all do to keep us and our children safe from this and any other virus is frequent and thorough hand washing.  Please help your children at home and at school with these steps recommended by the CDC:

Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way

Washing your hands is easy, and it's one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community-from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.

Follow these five steps every time.

    1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
    2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
    3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice.
    4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
    5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

Here is what I sent last week.

I thought this weekend would be a good time to let everyone know what we do daily, and will continue to do to ensure that all the children and staff stay as healthy as possible. I'm sure you all know that this has been a bad flu season, and unfortunately people are still being diagnosed with the flu. Then there has been the stomach bug and what I call the "Pelham cough" Now of course we are all aware of the spread of the Corona virus.

Every day we request that all children wash their hands before entering their class room. Most families do make sure that this happens, but now would be a good time to remind your child's caregiver to regularly have the children do this as well. In the class we have all been mindful of frequent hand such as after using the bathroom, before eating snack and after sneezing into your hands. and when we come inside from the playground. To clean the tables and toys we use a bleach solution that is hospital grade and is able to kill most of the germs that might be on surfaces. We all practice coughing and sneezing into our "shield" (this is putting your arm up and sneezing or coughing into your elbow.) We have been lucky this year with our illness rate much lower than the elementary schools in Pelham. When children appear sick in school they are brought to my office where we take their temperature and if they have a fever we contact their parents and ask them to come pick up their child. If they are coughing a lot or have a very runny nose or just are not acting like themselves we also will call the parents and request they come pick up their child.

Most importantly, children who do not feel well should not be sent to school. If your child has a fever, they should stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without medication.

Hopefully the flu season will end soon and the Corona virus will not have an active outbreak in Westchester or NYC where many of our families work.

I get frequent emails from the Westchester Health Department, and will update you all if there are any warnings or suggestions that pertain to our families

    Stay well,

    Barbara

    Hi NAEYC colleagues.
I applaud NAEYC for the statement released today that you can find on the NAEYC website. As an Early Care and Learning consultant, I find myself looking at the COVID-19 pandemic from what feels like an unusual perspective. I've been a childcare Teacher and Director responsible for making the very tough decisions facing childcare programs in this complicated crisis. I've worked in public service with responsibility for policy and guidance for childcare programs and providers in times like these. This current dilemma is unique in the span of my professional career in the complexity of the opposing priorities it presents.
If ever there is a workforce and an industry that the US should hold up, support, and believe in - it is childcare. Our country absolutely needs a functioning childcare ecosystem to get through this crisis and rebuild when it is over.
I wanted to do something, so I sat down and wrote the letter I would send to families if I were providing direct care right now with responsibility for the children and families in my program. Its attached here in case it may be helpful to those of you on the front lines. I also wrote a blog expanding on these thoughts. If you're interested you can find the blog on my Heart of a Child ECLC website at https://www.heartofachildconsultation.com/blog
Stay well and thanks for what you do - it is truly an essential service - you hold our collective future in your hands each day.

Very well written Reeva. You have mentioned every thought and concern I have been having. Thank you for taking the time to write the letter to families. It sums up my thoughts exactly. I may use parts of it tomorrow in the essence of saving time as we are in for a long day of answering concerns, keeping positive, and searching grocery stores for food and supplies. I just wanted you to know that your words were definitely validating today and your letter will help save me time tomorrow as well!

    Best!

Yes! Thank you NAEYC for the statement just released yesterday about COVID-19. I haven't been able to sleep all weekend- I've written letters to the editor and emailed my legislators and our towns government and executive councils. The NAEYC statement is strong and on point - childcare is essential and there need to be careful measures in place to care for our children and their teachers including hazardous duty compensation. Please print the statement and circulate widely- I am memorizing it and repeating it to everyone I talk to this week. Thank you colleagues! ❤️
