    Hello,
I have a two year old that is constantly wading up a blanket under diaper area and holding the blanket tight while moving hips up and down. I know many children comfort themselves this way and it may look a little different with others.  I am concerned because this child is doing it more than playing almost. Should I be concerned? Thanks for your thoughts.

    Hello Tammy,
First let me say that I think it is a good thing that has found a way to self calm.  The fact that you feel his need to perform this self calming behavior is interfering with functional play; if I'm understanding you correctly, would be a concern for me as a mother.  My questions would be: Why is there a need for this behavior so often?  What is happening when he feels the need to utilize this behavior?  The fact that you are concerned is a reason for you to speak with his pediatrician regarding your concerns.  We know our babies better than anyone and figuring out his needs or putting your mind at ease is important.

    Good Luck Awesome Mom,

Hi Tammy, I do believe that you have a right to be concerned. This activity has gone beyond the norm.

Have you mentioned your observations to her parents? I know when handling a situation such as this, the parent can be nonchalant about your concerns.

Remember you are a mandated reporter. You report suspicion, founded on your observations and knowledge of Child Development, then let Child Services find the answers.

Best of Hope to you and this child.
