Calendar and Weather Chart at group gatherings in preschool

I am interested in learning more about why preschool teachers are doing calendar activities and weather charting every day as a primary ritual for gatherings with children ages  3, 4, and 5.  I am interested to learn, do preschool teachers find calendar and weather charing meaningful and relevant to young children?  If not, what are your priorities and primary experiences for children at gathering times?  Thank you for your help in thinking about goals and experiences at group gatherings for children ages 3-5.

    Hello!

I have also been wrestling with these elements of the morning routine for the past few years. As a result I took out some of the routines we used to do. Now we begin with a song, count how many children present, and see what is on the calendar for the day. Then we have a message which sparks a conversation pertaining to classroom concerns or concepts. This keeps the morning meeting less monotonous.

Or course there are math and language concepts that can be embedded into a calendar routine, but young children perceive time differently than adults do so what may be meaningful to us is not necessarily so for the children. This is an interesting article on calendar use in preschool. https://www.naeyc.org/sites/default/files/globally-shared/downloads/PDFs/resources/pubs/calendartime.pdf

We use a regular calendar like adults use and record information rather than adding a day each time. This makes the calendar an accurate measurement tool for time. My 4's like to use it to look ahead or back on what we have done. Even in their beginning understanding of time, there are some elements of the calendar that they understand and appreciate. A calendar in which there is only one month and the days are added as you go does not allow the tool to be used to reflect or look ahead.

We have a quick weather report right before we go outside to recess (rather than morning meeting) which is when the children really need to know the weather. This also gives us more time at our morning meeting to discuss more relevant topics without the same conversation every day.

I often try to consider the kind of meetings I enjoy attending and try to create that for my students. I don't care for meetings that are unproductive or repetitive which I think that morning meetings can be. I am continually reflecting on our class' meetings and trying to improve upon them!

I haven't read the article you shared about calendar time yet, but I intend to this afternoon. However, I wished to reply quickly that I love the idea of recording events on the calendar. You are correct to mention that children perceive time differently that adults. Instead of the calendar being an abstract method of counting time (even though they still need to learn it), the calendar can be used with more concrete ideas of events. For my ELL's, this would be so beneficial in learning the concepts of past and present, tomorrow and yesterday, forward and backward. Thanks!

Sadly, I still hear of many including this practice in their early childhood classrooms.

    Hi Carol, and everyone,
what Julie wrote about morning circle time using calendars was really well put, and the article she linked is a short, simple power-pack of child development and developmentally appropriate practice (DAP)! Thanks for posting it Julie, what an awesome resource.
I really think the article sums calendar up without needing to add anything- but I like thinking about preschool patterns and bringing teaching intention to the forefront of lesson planning, so allow me to think out loud about calendar, DAP, and preschool patterns or routines.

I think "morning circle" and "calendar time" have become cornerstones in our preschools just because many of us grew up with the pattern, we accept them as "the way preschool works."  Most of the time, these practices may not cause any great disruption. However, add a few children with shorter attention spans, bring a rigid calendar routine into the youngest classrooms, or diverse classrooms with special needs, dual language learners, etc, and the struggle becomes apparent. The end result can be ugly: Children complaining school is boring, burned out teachers, dual language learners lagging in multiple domains, and frustrated, stressed parents who feel helpless to make their kids behave, and can't understand why their bright child is constantly acting out at school.

I hate using fear as a motivator, and that preschool classroom I just described, what a mess! No, calendar time  is not the path to raising dropouts.  Many Preschool classrooms have wonderful,"old school" calendar times that are educational, warm and fun. The old school way can help some children learn adult expectations, extend their ability to sit still and raise their hands before talking; it is a great way to teach "school behavior."  Still, it doesn't "teach" what many teachers thin; it does not fuel the development of sense of time, or understanding of days, weeks, months and years in a effective way.

Again, I return to the idea of intent: what do you want to teach? How can you make the lesson accessible to each particular student? Is the lesson developmentally appropriate for your particular students?
Because it is so easy to put calendar into our short, preschool day, and feel like we've accomplished our  "school" part of the day, I advocate scraping the calendar before kindergarten!
Children do need daily routines, and visual reminders; they do need to learn how to sit in a circle and take turns talking, but they need these "lessons" in a developmentally appropriate frame.
Dual language learners often "practice" English by repeating what they have just heard out loud- that's great! If your students are "echoing" you in circle time, they do it to process. Instead of making a blanket rule: "we don't talk when teachers are talking" modify your presentation to allow them time to process!
Some children "hear" better when they are allowed to fidget, and telling some children to make eye contact with you can actually impede their ability to understand what you are telling them.
Many teachers believe adapting their circle time to be more inclusive means "bright" students don't get the accelerated content they need to thrive- the reality is ALL students benefit from inclusive, dynamic, developmentally appropriate practices!
Instead of checking Pinterest for a great project, grab your curriculum guide, or a developmental text book, and reflect back on what happened last week. Did they love dinosaurs? - maybe you can expand dinosaur learning to support your teaching upcoming teaching goals? Our days are so short and busy, feel free to shorten up morning meeting time, especially if it's a struggle!

Lilian Katz has written extensively on calendar use in preschools. Thanks for including one in an earlier post.

Here is a story that should illustrate the entire issue:
I was invited to visit a preschool classroom that was housed in a public school. It was close to the end of the year. The children were seated on the floor in somewhat of a circle. The teacher was doing the calendar with the children with particular emphasis on the concepts of "today, yesterday, and tomorrow". The teacher asked the children what they did yesterday. I assume the teacher's expectation was that the children would relate what had happened in school the day before or what they did with their families yesterday. Instead, children's understanding of yesterday included events that took place a month ago, a year ago, and more. s, what did this tell me. It told me that some of the concepts related to the calendar are not appropriate to include with calendar time. Their understanding is more about before and after, not yesterday or tomorrow.

I love Lillian's story! My son, when he was 4 asked, "Is tomorrow the next day?" when I asked him to explain what he meant, he said, There's Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Tomorrowday.   One of the miraculous gifts of childhood is living in the here and now.

I agree that using the calendar isn't DAP. Instead I use 5 chains and have the children remove a link each day to determine how many days are left at school. This will be done by the teacher helper in the class.  The weather chart is used in a similar manner. The weather helper looks outside the window to see what the weather is and mark it on the weather wheel and draw a line into the weather graph.  I use this lesson to teach counting how many sunny days etcetera have they've seen on the chart. My preschoolers love it they seek out to pick different jobs and they are learning leadership too.

Thank you for that link Cheri! That is why I still do calendar time. I also develop different patterns for the number cards each month. We talk about how calendars are different and that 1 doesn't always start at the left. However,  we don't worry about saying the date, day of the week, or month.

Yesterday, one of my 4K kiddos asked what number our field trip would be on. Another child replied with the correct answer. I asked that child how she got her answer, and she told me she counted the empty pockets between the number for yesterday and the picture of the bus (the representation for our field trip).

Thank you for sharing this Cheri. I do use a calendar in my 3's and 4's class but not in the traditional way and it takes only a minute or two.  We don't talk about yesterday, today, and tomorrow or time in general, I know that the children are too young to understand the concept of time.  We do count, look for numbers that we recognize, practice patterning, and practice left to right and top to bottom movements.  We don't do all of this in one session.  We just briefly use the calendar to practice one skill as a small part of our circle time.  I think the calendar time can be used appropriately if your goals are developmentally appropriate.  I don't think it can hurt the children to become familiar with what the calendar looks like before heading to Kindergarten.  Our circle times are brief and set the tone for the day.  It is a time to share our "news" from home and talk about what to expect during our school day.

    Susan Ricci,
In full agreement with your use of the calendar in ways that developmentally age appropriate. Over the school year, we have used the calendar to support our daily routines as well as to advance early learning concepts across the foundational learning domains. The most notable benefit is evident in the area of expressive language during circle time. Here is an example - Keep in mind that for us circle time is conversation and communication time!
Teacher to our four-year-olds, "What did you do this weekend?"
Student's reply, "On Saturday, I went to the park with my family. Sunday we stayed home and rest."

Just be cognizant of what a 4 year old understands about time when doing calendar in the classroom. There are many ways to approach this, and many of respondents listed ways, that can be DAP.

When I taught kindergarten in Switzerland many years ago, each day a child went to our weather book where each page was divided into three columns for arrival, lunch, and end of the school day. Students would draw and color in what the sky looked like at different times of the day. We would discuss the weather at the end of the day. Students could see that weather changes over the day.

    RE: Calendar & Weather Chart:

I am in full agreement that why loose valuable open communication time with the Calendar and Weather Chart. I teach at a French School where many of our children are ELL and are eager to learn expressive language through Group Meetings. During this time so much is happening open dialog where children can explore language without wasting time on the Calendar and Weather Chart when in reality they have not as of yet know the concept of "Time". I usually open the Group Meeting with "Mindful" activities where we can hear the sound of a soft soothing sound to center ourselves and share what we are going to do and or allow them to share what they are going to create during work time! Thank You for sharing wonderful insights about the Calendar & Weather Chart.
