What can I do?

Hello all! My name is Latrice. This is my first time posting here. I'm 40 years old and stuck! Started to be in the education field  late but I'm trying to follow my heart. I graduated with an online bachelors degree in ece last year without obtaining my license to teach (long story). For five years I have been subbing at my local schools. I don't know how to obtain my license other than going back to school and getting into more debt. I don't want to do that with only a sub job and the mountains of debt I already have. Does anyone have any suggestions on any ft jobs I can do with an ece degree? Or know how I can get my license to teach prek? My expertise is birth to grades 2/3. I hope this degree don't wind up just sitting on my shelf. Someone please help!

    Hi,

You can check with your community college. Like I am in Maryland, Montgomery county, in our community college, there is a associate degree comes with a teaching license. And it's free, you just have to work in county for 2 years.

So feel free to give a call to your community college, and see what they say.

    Hope this will be helpful.

    Blessings,

    Hello Latrice,

I am so proud of what you have accomplished, it is remarkable!  I was wondering if you are located near a Community Care Licensing Dept you could reach out to them they may possibly guide you in the right direction. Make sure to bring all your diplomas with you.

    Good Luck and Best Wishes

    Hello Latrice,

Do you have the opportunity to open a day care of your own?

    Maguy,

Owning a day care center is actually one of my dreams. Unfortunately, I do not have the funds or the opportunity, that I know of, to get it started. I took up Day Care Management at Penn Foster but nothing happens without funds.

    Latrice:

Along with the good advice so far--Requirements for teaching in EEC vary from state to state.  A good place to start might be to check the certification requirements in your state, either by calling the licensors directly or looking on line at the website for your state licensing agency.  In Massachusetts that would be the Department of Early Education and Care but I don't know about other states.  There are usually requirements about what classes you need and about how long you need to have taught, including student teaching or substituting, the age group that you want to be certified for.

You have a great education already so you might be much closer than you think.  Best of luck.

    Aren,

I have called the licensing agency before. They basically lead me to "acceptable" colleges which then lead me to a list of classes and things to do. All my mind comprehended was going back to school to get into more debt. The process was so complicated that i had to go to a meeting or class just to explain the steps which still wasnt useful to me 🤦🏾‍♀️😩😕

Student teaching is the only way i found to get licensing. That is done only during earning a degree which my school has not helped me much on. I have heard of subs becoming teachers but not in Alabama.

I do feel close to the finish line. There's just that one or two things I seem to be missing. I appreciate the tips. Thank you!

Here in Indiana you do have to have a degree to teach at a licensed childcare center, but you do not have to have a license.  Are there any childcare centers in your area?
