    Hello,
I have a question, how you can stop a three years old child from drinking milk in a bottle during napping?

In our infant and toddler center, bottles are used in the infant room only. A toddler may drink milk at lunch time from an open cup.

Why does it bother you-for the child to have a bottle during nap?  Safety?  Foundations/  California Community Care license-Family/ social services & California Department of Education title; 5, 15, 17, 22.  "never put a child to bed/nap/sleep with their bottle-alone; can choke or smother to death.'  Children with bottles we hold & feed-burp, lay on back to sleep"  With that said- many families-many traditions breastfeed their children up to age 7 or for as long as mother lactates food.  Indeed excellent question-for your Site Director.  peace.

Parent participation is essential! I would definitely ask for a face to face meeting, and include public health nurse if possible. This is a safety issue, as well as developmentally inappropriate, but the patents may be receiving different information from family and friends, past parenting practices, cultural practices etc. It could also be a matter of what is "easiest" if the child will not go to bed without it at home. At any rate, this is not appropriate. In our state, it's actually against the WACs. At this point, a nurse might be able to assist in presenting a transition plan for the child, family and staff can all live with.   Good luck!

Does your center have a written policy about bottles?
You need to look at the big picture as to why the child needs nurturing from a bottle and work with the family on the root causes. It could be cultural or socio-emotional issues, to name a couple.

So, this can be a touchy subject.  It could be that the parent is more attached than the child.  I agree with the other replies in advising that bottles be used in the infant room only, getting the parent on board and finding the reason as to why the child still needs this comfort.  However, Texas Minimum Standards, 746.2505 4 - C, states that children (toddlers) should "never be allowed to sleep with or walk around with a bottle or training cup."

We use the standards often when these kinds of situations come up and when the parent sees that our hands are tied and we have no choice, then they quickly get on board and the child adjusts in short order.  It's just a matter of pointing out the facts.

    I hope this helps.
