Health Insurance for Child Care Providers

Has anyone purchased the health insurance offered through NAEYC? Or does anyone have suggestions to support child care staff in purchasing low cost health insurance?

My boss went to an insurance agency and got health insurance we have been able to pay into. We are a community based organization and not in a union so we do not have the luxury of department of education or union insurance. It costs me out of paychecks 340.00 a month for a single. My boss pays the other half so we are talking about 680 a month for a single. Families would run about 1800 a month/900 our of monthly paychecks so its costly. In NYS I make too much for medicaid/state health insurance/marketplace would be about 1000 to 1500 a month or about half my monthly net so something has got to give.

WOW! I had no clue that NAEYC has insurance. I had to buy my own and come out of pocket for dental and health.

I'd double check that!  From my experience, they offer dental insurance but not health.  Hope I'm wrong!

I thought dental coverage was the only insurance option.

Tamara, NAEYC doesn't actually provide health insurance directly to our members. If you log-in to our site, you can access this page on our insurance benefits: https://www.naeyc.org/get-involved/membership/login/insurance

Our insurance partner, TIE (The Trust for Insuring Educators) provides, through their services, access to an exchange:

Compare health insurance plans from leading insurers side-by-side, and purchase and enroll in coverage online through eHealth, a leading private health insurance exchange. eHealth features educational resources and licensed agents to help consumers select coverage.

Once you are on their site, you can enter your zip code and see what insurance option are available for you.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for sharing. In addition, if anyone is interested in supplemental insurance..AFLAC has a pretty comprehensive plan that allows practitioners to take advantage of group rates that can either be paid from the host employer, or stand alone employee.  The advantage outlines the discount of 40% if 3 or more people sign up.  Not bad if your looking to add some affordable benefits to your team.  If interested you can contact Rosemary_Nikkel@us.aflac.com

I would not recommend the dental offered through NAEYC.  Once you read the fine print, it would cost $600 a year for a maximum of $1000 a year in what would be paid out.

HI Joy and everyone who responded to your post. It's been a while since you posted, but I wanted to let all of you know about a free webinar on September 23, 2021 presented by early childhood workforce experts @Sharon Easterling and Louise Stoney about how the American Rescue Plan Act and other pandemic recovery measures may be used to offer health care benefits to staff members. A lot has happened in relation to heath care benefits since you posted. I thought this webinar, New Options for Health Care for Early Childhood Professionals might be helpful. You can learn more here: https://www.earlychildhoodwebinars.com/webinars/a-new-day-for-health-care-options-by-louise-stoney-and-sharon-easterling/
