    Posted 03-17-2020 02:57 AM

    Dear all,
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019, young children around the world may have either experienced trauma (e.g., lockdown) from the coronavirus or have been exposed to scary images about the virus through media. It is extremely hard for children to understand why social distancing is happening, and why they can't play with their friends anymore. Parents and educators are wondering how to talk to young children about COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing.

I have written a social story titled "Something Strange Happened in My City: A Social Story about the Coronavirus Pandemic for Young Children" to explain to young children about the virus and social distancing. This book is for parents, guardians, and educators to help children aged 3-8 understand the coronavirus pandemic. And it is FREE!

One of the best ways caretakers can help young children cope is by sharing age-appropriate information, reassuring their safety, and learning about the many people working to fight the virus.

Please download the book, read it to your loved one, and share it with parents with young children. I hope my book can help comfort young children during this coronavirus pandemic.

You can download the book from Asian Interest Forum's webpage at https://sandybabaece.wixsite.com/covid19referencelist. Sandy and I put together some useful resources here to help ECE educators. If you have any resources, please share it with us and we will add it to our resource page. Thank you.

    Hi Annie,
Thank you for your kind words. I would also like to thank Kristen Kennen from CT for taking the time to share her thoughts with me. Per Kristen, the part about children donating money might not be relevant to the Head Start families, and I totally agree. The equity issue is critical, especially in this difficult time. Therefore, I have changed the story by suggesting children draw or write to people/adults/children in need.  See below.

Sandy and I have uploaded a new version to the site. If you have an old version, please check the website for the new story at

Thank you to all of the volunteer translators who've spent countless hours helping out by translating the story into Vietnamese, Chinese, Spanish and Japanese (The Farsi version is coming soon later this week). The 4 language versions of the story are available now on the AIF webpage and please share this resource widely with your community. You can view and download the stories here at the NAEYC Asian Interest Forum page @  https://sandybabaece.wixsite.com/covid19referencelist.

Thank you for sharing this Sandy and Jenny! I would like to also share another social story about discussing school and childcare center closures and social distancing with young children. The story is sponsored by Conscious Discipline and is being translated into over 30 languages! The story is available on the Conscious Discipline website (here: https://consciousdiscipline.com/why-cant-i-go-to-school-social-story/) in their sponsored format, and is also available in an editable format in a public shared Google Drive folder (here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1kpLIujLSpgsxlz67VscF7LnlitkpAf8P). As translations are completed, I will continue to upload them! Please feel free to access, use, and share widely! Sandy and Jenny, I have also added your story to the folder! Thanks again for sharing!

    Dear Kerrie,
Thanks so much for sharing the social story! Wow! So amazing that the story got translated into 30 languages! Do people volunteer? How do they do quality control? Sandy and I relied on volunteer work, and we also did careful cross-check for translation, so it was very time-consuming. Thanks again for sharing this story! The more the merrier for young children!

Fabulous! Thank you so much for your willingness to help out with the translation. So excited to know Arabic will be available! Your generosity is highly appreciated, especially during this difficult time.  I will follow-up with you regarding the translation.

I am also touched by email inquiries from educators/psychologists/therapists around the world who wanted to help translate my social story into their home language. Thank those people's kind acts, so pretty soon children in Croatia, Italy, Brazil, and Portugal will have a chance to access this book.

Kindness has no boundary! Thank you!

Hi Luann, thank you so much for your note! We look for the top five languages spoken within a community so we can target the translation need.  In our community where we are, we are currently looking for Korean and Tagalog translation help. With that said, if anyone has suggestions on more language translation need for the social story in your community, please share it here so we can focus on our volunteer translators recruitment effort.

We are so thankful for so many volunteers who have stepped up and we want to thank you again for all of your generosity for donating your time to help each other out during this challenging time.

Please continue to stay healthy and safe!

Hello! We relied on volunteers, specifically asking for volunteers who were either native speakers or fluent in the language. While we know they may not all be 100% correct (especially with some of the technology glitches that come up when translating across languages - eg. software doesn't support the language), we decided it was more important that the story got out to families and educators as quickly as possible for now and we would worry about double-checking the translation as things slowed down. We also recognize that the short story likely could have multiple correct translations in the same language, just as it could be written multiple different ways in English. So, in the end, given the situation we all find ourselves in, we decided to trust the volunteers and share as quickly as possible, making corrections later if needed. Thanks for the question!

Hello my name is Shelia Phillips and I work with Head Start / Pre-K families.  The Social Story posted on NAYCE would be great to send to my families, At this time due to the size of the story it can not be attached as an attachment. Is there anyway this could corrected, so we could send to our families emails? Thank you for you time and help in this matter.

Thank you for your inquiry. The file sizes are pretty big which makes them hard to attach in email communication. In the evening, the download speed is very slow due to high traffic on the site. Sandy and I are working on a solution and hope to solve the problem soon. In the meantime, please direct parents to the link. Our apologies!

Hi Jessica, Yes please share with your families! For the Conscious Discipline versions, if you create an account (it is free and you don't need to include much personal information - I think it is just an email and password) you can download them. They are also available in the shared Google Drive folder: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1kpLIujLSpgsxlz67VscF7LnlitkpAf8P. As far as copyright issues - I am by far no expert on that, but my understanding is that as long as you credit Conscious Discipline and don't remove the Conscious Discipline logo or the authorship, it should be fine! I have been talking with the author about it, and she said that she just wants it to get out to families and children!

    Dear Luann,
Thank you for your kind words! I LOVE your idea! It is very crazy with children at home 24/7! I know by now all the parents appreciate ECE teachers more! Doing Yoga or taking a walk definitely would be helpful for both parents and children. I wish I could have made the suggestion. However, when I wrote the social story, I focused on "social distancing." Simply just focus on one concept, the story was very long already. Sigh. I wish I have more space to address many important contents such as doing yoga, exercising, and taking a walk. That said, if you know any resources that focus on the helpful activities you mentioned, can you please share it with everyone? I, for one, would love to practice Yoga at home! Thank you!

    Dear All,
Kindness has no boundary! Many educators/psychologists/therapists see the urgent need to explain to young children about the new coronavirus. It has been a pleasure for me to working with Dr. Sanja Tatalović Vorkapić, Associate Professor, University of Rijeka, Croatia, for the past week. As of today, Dr. Sanja starts the process disseminating the book to children in Croatia! Sandy and I will upload the version to the AIF Resources Center soon!

    Dear All,
Many thanks for ALL of you who helped the AIF sharing the social story with children around the world. As of today, we have more than 11k downloads, 9 languages available, 7 more languages to come, and children in more than 14 countries have had access to the book. It is amazing that all of you were willing to help out despite your insane workloads! Such an amazing ECE group! All the work is done by volunteers without payment!

It was touching to receive emails from people in different countries sharing the impact of the virus on them and their children. Teachers, eductors, principals, psychologists, therapists, researchers, college dean, and the Ministry of Education all work very hard to take care of young children's psychological needs at this unprecedented time. I know many of you are doing an incredible job helping young children, Kudos to all of you-our ECE heroes!

I made a chart of the daily download, see below. Dutch, Italian, and Malay are the new languages added to the site, please share! Thank you!

    Dear All,
Many thanks to our ECE heroes helping out during an unprecedented time! No one knows how long we need to socially distance ourselves from others to flatten the curve! Yet, I keep finding touching stories among us! I think it is important for us to share ECE educators' stories, so we know how fabulous our colleagues are! Sandy and I appreciate educators around the world for their timely assistance to translate and disseminate the social story. Our end goal is the same: to reassure children about their safety!

The Croatia Ministry of Education made the book on their web page and emailed their K-1public schools a copy of the book. The Hong Kong Librarian Association made the book available on their website. The Berkely Unified School District asked for the book. First 5 San Francisco shared the book with their child care providers. Chinese schools in Singapore made the book available to their parents. EPCC, P.E.A.C.E, Erikson Institute, CSUF, and the Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Center for Resilient Children all shared the book in their newsletter. Thank you ALL for helping us sending the book to more children!

As of today, the following languages are available on the NAEYC AIF Webpage and NAEYC Community Resources Center. Dear All,

I am so excited to announce that the illustrated social story and a lesson plan on how to use the book are now available at

    https://sandybabaece.wixsite.com/covid19referencelist.

The illustration is sponsored by the GLOPO.JCCREATION and ART CENTER, which is found by Apen Lee, head of art direction of the international movie star, Jackie Chen. The company is helping with animation as well.

The NAEYC Interest Forums met about 2 weeks ago and decided to send 100,000 hard copies of my social story to children living in rural areas or underserved neighborhoods. Led by Dr. Cathy Grace, we are working closely with NAEYC staff to identify possible funding agencies, resources, and sponsors.

Sandy and I are very thankful for all the support we receive from ALL of you! Please help us share the resources to parents with young children! Thank you!

    Hi Dr. Yen,
I finally had a chance to read your book and skimmed through the lesson plan. I loved how you turned a scary image of the COVID-19 circular image into a positive image surrounded by a circle of animals (children) as well as the story itself. The science experiment was a fantastic tie-in to illustrate the concept of the virus and social distancing. Thank you so much for sharing, and I hope to share this with my fellow friends and educators.

Sandy and I also would like to give a big shoutout to our NAEYC friends, Michale and Susan, for their help and promotion of this book. We are so thankful for all the Interest Forums' support on this project. Thank Dr. Cathy Grace for her leadership in helping us! We know there are more people out there helping us, please accept our sincere appreciation. Thank you!

Thank you for your efforts in translating this story in short period of time, however, I would like to see a Spanish version soon, since Latino children are a high percentage of New York population where is it consider the epicenter of the virus.  Thanks.

    Hi Nancy,
I can't agree with you more about the urgent need for a Spanish version of the social story. With the support and assistance from First Five SanFrancisco and Dr. Marlene Zepeda, the Spanish version was one of the few versions we translated in the very beginning. If you go to the website, you can find the "Spanish" version. Please let us know if you have trouble access to the document. You can access the resources at

The animated social story is very cute! A 7-year-old girl's conversion with her mom is adorable!

Thank you for the Spanish version of the story.  I will immediately will send to our pre-k teachers and child care providers to use for lessons online.  Thanks again.
