I work with many non-English preschool age children.
I use flannel board stories. Flannel board stories help them guess the meaning of the words. They are fun and engaging for children who do not understand what you are saying. Almost any story can be made into a flannel story.
I sing, I sing everything. If they drop their fork on the floor I have a song for that. If I want them to follow me, I have a song for that. I use songs to help them learn about their body parts.
We use words to describe their actions as they do them. For example: Child is attempting to paint. When they pick up the brush we say oh you picked up the paint brush, your painting with red on the paper, the red is getting larger, you're spreading it all over the paper. They're playing in the sandbox we say, oh you picked up the bucket, that's a bucket. you put sand in the bucket, that is sand and a point to the sand or pick it up.
We ask the parents to teach us some simple words like: good morning, play, sit down, good, yes, no, bathroom, wait. I ask them to teach me a popular children's song.
We see a significant increase in English when we use these methods.
