Do you have an absenteeism policy and if so what is it?

The policy my organization (Early Learning Center serving children 4 weeks to 5 years) follows is available here: http://earlylearningwa.org/images/ProgramManual/Family_Support/ERSEA/Attendance/08.009.02_Attendance_Procedure.pdf

We emphasize working with families to address barriers to attendance, but also stress the impact being absent has on the child's learning and development. It really depends on each family's circumstances for exactly how I will go about addressing the absences.

Our center has an employee absenteeism policy that has worked well for us for years, and is based on seniority.  This policy accounts for personal days and request offs.  Our Sick policy rewards staff for NOT calling off.  We find it works well because, just as with children, if employees receive positive reinforcement for doing something good, it is likely they will repeat that positive behavior.

    Request Off Policy:
"... all employees are entitled to unpaid time off.  Amount of time-off granted is determined by seniority, and/or specific agreements made prior to hiring.  Additional time beyond the amount described below, may only be approved provided the employee has found ample coverage for the requested time off, and the director approves of the coverage in writing.
Employed for Less than 1 year: 3 unpaid days/year
    Employed for 1-3 years: 4 unpaid days/year
    Employed for 3-5 years: 5 unpaid days/year
    Employed for 5-7 years: 10 unpaid days/year
    Employed for 7+ years: 15 unpaid days/year"

    Sick Policy:
"In addition, each employee is entitled to 2 unpaid sick days per year.  In the event of illness or other personal matter which requires an employee to be absent from work, an employee must contact the center director ASAP.  If a call is made less than two hours before an employees's scheduled start time, or if no call is received, this will result in an unexcused absence, and a written warning will be added to the employee's personnel file.
Employees who do not use 1 or both of their unpaid sick days shall be rewarded with a 'Healthy Bonus Check', available on the anniversary date of hire.  Recipients of a Healthy Bonus Check who are full time employees shall receive a check equivalent to 8 hours of their hourly pay (with appropriate taxes withheld), per unused sick day (for a maximum of 16 hours).  Recipients who are part-time employees shall receive a check equivalent to 4 hours of their hourly pay, per unused sick day (for a maximum of 8 hours).  Employees who terminate their employment are no longer eligible to receive a Healthy Bonus Check."

    Hope this helps!

I loved your absenteeism policy!  How many unexcused absent's do you allow. What does your discipline look like
