    Hello,

Does anyone happen to know where I can find videos or training material on staff positivity? I have a staff member who comes to work with a negative attitude almost everyday. I want to help my employee understand how their negative attitude affects their whole day. From the children to the other staff, everyone can feel the negativity which only is making their day worse.

    Thank you!

Hello Stacie.  I know you are having an amazing day so far.  It was to rain here in Katy TX which it did for a minute  but I spoke out loud that I wanted a beautiful day and now the sun is shining, the birds are singing and it is beautiful. I am not saying I speak and magic happens I am just making small talk.  But with my small talk positive influences can be made.  Just as with children everything we do and say to adults can change the day.  We lead by actions and positive words.  Now with my little insight let me move on to my comment about your question. :)

I know with staff many different reasons why people have a negative attitude exist  thus there is no one answer for your problem.  To me getting to know your staff is key and then once you know them and a little about their personal life and who they REALLY are you can understand their negativity a little better.  The fact is the people around us play key roles in our attitude.   So this will help you understand where this is coming from.  There are three fears that feed into negative attitudes: 1 fear of not being loved by others 2 fear that those closes to us will disrespect us and 3 fear that some bad event is going to take place.  I have a dear friend that when I tell her something like "your makeup looks amazing" she will come back with "so it looked bad every other day?"  There are many ways that negative attitudes manifest.

As a director I feel it is our job to aid our staff in developing the expectation that they will excel and master their skills as teachers.  I feel that to make a staff member see the importance of their career and to see that we are willing to assist them is our first step.  Then to see them as an individual.  When we view them as an individual we can focus on what they are good at and build on that just as we expect them to do with the children.  Doing little things for them to show we care can also aid to dissipate the negative attitudes.   We can also catch them doing a great job of being positive and be sure to point it our and make them feel good about their actions and thus we model positive attitude and make a point without pointing out the negative.

Remember that we all like to feel appreciated, valued and respected for our abilities and skills. With some TLC your staff will begin to feel like family and will be comfortable and have a more positive attitude.  Stacie just look into your self and think what makes you feel good about your self and spread that around.

You will see a difference I just know it!!

I am so glad and impressed to learn how much you care to help your employees. I believe the relationship of director and staff, & knowing them truly and understanding their life and problems can help them become positive. Some times, only a person want is a listening ear. Might be that employee of yours is lacking that listening ear. In educational institutions our prime focus are the children and their wellbeing, but we cannot neglect the support for those who are directly linked in facilitating that environment for children. They are human beings and have all kind of issues in life and need the support of each other ( teaching staff), to be encouraged and having confidence in superior management, of their support. Talk to your teacher and assure her she is a good teacher.  Instead of conveying a message, you are negative. Love is strong, for children 0-to 100yrs of age.

    Hi Seema,

Thank you! You are definitely correct about the listening ear. I think I need to schedule time for my employees to come and sit and chat with me or my co-director uninterrupted for at least ten minutes just to listen. even if we can start once or twice a month. I believe this can show that we truly care and value our teachers who are caring for our precious little ones daily.

    Hello Amy,

Thank you! From your opening paragraph I felt a huge weight being taken off of my shoulders. Your insight into my small dilemma is truly going to help me. I am already seeing a small change in her walking in to work to start the day mentality.

Hi Stacie, I am responding to your questions about helping staff come to work with a positive attitude.  Your question made me sad for you, the educators with attitude, and the children.  My own work is in spiritual development of young children.  The more I give workshops and speak to educators on this topic which is defined as deep relationships (connections), moments spent in wonder, awe, joy, inner peace that lead to acts of kindness and empathy, the more I see that educators need to develop their own spirituality as well.  If an educator is not feeling or doing any of this for themselves then for sure they are not acting as an integrated and productive adult.  To help anyone get to a happier place, the first steps are truly seeing the person in front of you.  Know them.  Care about them.  Help them find their passion...being in nature helps.  By bestowing empathy and kindness onto them, you will be nurturing their spiritual essence.  Help them to bring something new to the school that reflects what they love to do.  Do not criticize too much, show appreciation, etc.  Hope this helps.

I have written two books on spiritual development in the way I have just described.  I am listing the books here if you are interested.  Both books can be ordered from Amazon.

    Good Morning Stacie,

I would have to agree with a lot of the other submissions in this thread. Before addressing the issue through videos or trainings, try and break down the communication barrier and see if you can find the root cause. This will be a great starting point for a couple reasons: 1) The Employee will hopefully realize that others are noticing how this attitude is affecting them. 2) By taking the more personal approach, the hope is the Employee will feel they are valued and cared about.

Take this as an opportunity to allow them to vent and let all their emotions out. They might not have a positive support staff at home. BUT, to answer your question, I've found YouTube actually has ALOT of great videos/trainings.

    Good Luck!

    Riley.

With our staff we were noticing the same thing and I have noticed that this time of year it often happens, people are tired and looking forward to summer.  The leadership group in our staff read the book "What's going well" by Greg Bell and really started focusing on what is going well for us and that can be at home or at work.  There are a few short clips on YouTube with him speaking about this as well.  We also started a What's going well board in a couple of our spaces so that staff can write a quick sticky note and put it up there to share with their peers.  Focusing on the positive really shifts the mindset and I believe that often has to happen when someone is getting ready for the day!  It looks like you have some other great ideas here as well, so hopefully you find some success!

    Hello

I highly recommend looking at the Nurturing Heart Approach by Howard Glasser.  His Children Success Foundation is online and offers free support and videos to help learn the approach.
