Open Discussion Forum

    Posted 11-25-2018 08:18 AM
    Greetings,

Is there a way to interact on the interest forums? I tried to use interest forum as a way to reach out to people, I either got no response or "a better way to contact me..."

The resources are also months old and some have zero or limited resources.

What is the objective of the interest forum and will they have a discussion option at some point?

    Hi Lark,
The Hello forum was just launched a year ago, so features are still being rolled out and moderators trained. Most of the posted resources are ones from the previous Interest Forum set-up so that they are available for new forum/Hello members. Traditionally, Interest Forums have had their activities held at the Annual Conference, and are working on shifting to having more going on online in the next year or so. NAEYC is looking for tech-savvy folks who would be interested in helping with online community facilitation, so if that's a way you'd like to be involved you can send an email to hello@naeyc.org.

Thanks for the info. I'm contacting now. I must say for over a year I have tried to volunteer for various committees and just end up starting my own actions. I hope people get back with me. I am sending my CV and my enthusiasm and hope my efforts to volunteer garners a response.

    Cheers

Hi Lark-- a few of the interest forums have facebook groups, and a few of those are active. The diversity and equity interest forum facebook group is very active, and folks there may be able to connect you to other forums. Here's the link:

Sounds like NAEYC would be lucky to have you, I hope they follow up!

    Hello Lark,

I would love to hear more about what you are trying to do with your enthusiasm and offer of time -- an almost always valued resource.

Which interest forums have you been sharing with and posting to?  I have seen your name a couple of times on forum discussions.  Have you checked the NAEYC web site for open positions and needed skills?  If not, please do.  There are several ways you can contribute.  Are you interested in writing about some of your experiences for the NAEYC publications?

    Lark,

I've set up a meeting with you but also wanted to reply here on the thread in case others have similar questions.  Our forums are very active at

NAEYC's annual conference --this year the forums presented 32 sessions and there were 23 business meetings (where forum members come together to talk about issues and also plan for the next year).

But we are in transition and working toward doing more collaboration online through hello.naeyc.org. Some forums have hosted  online book clubs, webinar series with experts in the field, and an online mentoring project. We have some new forums and a handful of existing forums with facilitator leadership opportunities.  So, depending on the forum the activity level is going to vary in visibility in this online space.

While we love that some forums have active facebook pages (this is a great way to reach potential members!) we would also like to encourage more interest forum conversation and activity on hello.naeyc.org.

I encourage others to ask questions and continue this discussion -- for instance, I think the facilitators would like to know what kinds of online activities as members would you want to participate in?

If you are interested in learning about Interest Forum facilitator opportunities please reach out at hello@naeyc.org.

    Best,

    Michael

Michael, thank you for this reply about using the interest forums.  I think it is important to keep in mind that not everyone uses Facebook for a number of excellent reasons.
