    Hi All

I would love to hear from those who have experience using the CLASS observation tool. What are the pros and cons. I am curious after using the tool and identifying areas of growth, are there training or webinars that align with it.

At my school we use the NMPreK observation tool to record a child's progress with the 27 Indicators of the ELG's (Early Learning Guidelines).
There is a process to it, in that we are supposed to be observing only two or three observations at at time. Taking notes, pictures etc. are all assessment strategies to be used to decide where in the Rubric the child is

There are many schools and centers in Tarrant County (Fort Worth, TX area) that are using the CLASS observation tool as part of a county-wide study. The local Early Learning Alliance (ELA) is using the data to look at how we can support and improve care and learning in the area. To my knowledge, teachers who have been asked to use the tool received training on its use, as well as having continued support with a mentor who has also been trained. The teacher/mentor teams meet periodically to discuss the support they need - both in using the tool and beyond. I thought the support structure sounded like a great way to introduce a new tool to the teachers as well as make for its successful use in the future. I will say, however, that the training and support structure were made possible by the local ELA, which is group of administrators, foundations, and like-minded organizations that gather to improve early childhood care and education in Tarrant County.
