For those who do a class Valentine Party...pre-COVID we would invite students to bring in little cards / treats from home to share / pass-out to their classmates. Due to COVID-precautions it doesn't seem to be a good practice to implement this year, however, I may be overthinking the whole thing. Would love insight into this!

    Hi,
We have always done just cards.  cards. Over the years, the 4 year old teachers have stopped asking parents to by cards, but have the children make small cards for their classmates. The children glue scraps of red, pink, purple and white paper on paper. Then they can sign their name (if they are able) inside and write Happy Valentines Day (if they want and are able) inside. They really enjoy making their own cards. Some teachers ask the parents to send in a red snack for the class (red peppers, red jello, red grapes, etc) and the children wear something red to school.  We do not allow parents to send in small gifts or candy at any time

instead of having the children bring Valentine cards to each friend, you could have the children make cards for each member of their family.  For treats, you could request families to bring items that are prepackaged in the bag (Chex mix, carrots, apples, animal crackers or the traditional sweets).  On party day, have teachers open the bagged treats and have the children wash their hands before they pass out the goodies to their friends.  This practice will help control how many hands touch the goodies and still allow the children to enjoy a special day.

    Hello,

During COVID, you can still allow treats as long as it is pre-packaged, store-bought, and individually wrapped. That was our restriction for our Halloween party and the parents were very understanding. Cards should be safe too.

I would encourage you to make this a class project. You can talk about how important it is to care for each other and share kindness. Make the day less about cookies and sweets and more about kindness and care for others. All safety protocols are already being followed in your classroom.
