CDAs and Renewal

I wanted to speak on behalf of those with CDA in preschool and touch on renewals and teachers with them moving to another state as I have done. While I am not against continuing education, should not active CDAs and CEU's from other states like Maryland be considered exemptions from state and county Departments in Florida if one has gotten continuing Education units from another state like Maryland and can't that one Maryland 45 hour CEU's for preschool be used alone with work experience and a director's recommendation to renew CDA's annually? Just a thought, but with our personal busy lives and COVID, it should be considered by all Departments of Education and the CDA council alone.

That makes good sense Jonathan. Let’s keep this conversation going so it can reach the proper authorities.

It is my understanding that for CDA Council/Renewal purposes, the state in which the continuing education is received does not matter, as long as it is issued from a training organization.  As far as state continuing education requirements, that will vary from state to state.

    Jonathan,
This is an important issue to reform in order for the childcare sector to attract and retain a quality workforce. Have you tried calling the D.C. offices of NAEYC (202-232-8777) or Zero to Three (202-638-1144) to ask if they are working to address state-to-state reciprocity in teacher training requirements? Here in MN we had similar issues in the K-12 space for years, with well-intentioned state legislators insisting that home-grown training was superior and refusing to recognize teaching licenses from other states. Even if the quality margins were real, that is a tough stance to justify given the low ROI teachers earn on their training investments. Classroom performance is a better, but harder, yardstick to use.
    Good luck!

    Jonathan,

Personally, as a PD Specialist, I believe the only requirement is that the training be received within the period between CDA issue date and expiration date, and yes, from a training organization.
