    Good morning!

For those in Family Child Care Homes, what are some ways that you engage your preschool aged children in Black History Month? Do you find it hard to figure out a way to do activities for younger children?

The way I do Black History Month is by introducing inventions by black people and creating an activity around it.  Like the first successful open heart surgeon Daniel Hale Williams. We cut out and color hearts and look at the model of the human body and talk about why it was important that Daniel Hale Williams did this.

History itself is not really developmentally appropriate for the 2-3's, a concept 4s are just beginning to try to understand. That said I agree with Tamesha, you tell or read stories of achievement and build activities from them. Keep it positive. Build a foundation of pride and respect. It is not time for them to learn about details of injustices. I also include reading and discussions about noticing and celebrating diversity, part of ongoing social curriculum.

    Temesha,
You inquired about resources to help early childhood teachers cope with bullying.  There's an abundance of bullying-specific resources for both young children and the adults caring for them, at http://peaceeducators.org/article-categories/bullying/ .  That website is of an organization that helped to found NAEYC's Peace Educators Interest Forum, which you may join through HELLO.

OOPS!  I had meant to post this in reply to the "Teaching Kindness" inquiry.  Please excuse the mis-classification.

The 3 year old teacher at our center created an MLK display that included the children telling her what their dream would be.  I thought this was an excellent way to introduce MLK and the "I Have A Dream" speech to this age.  It is also a language/literacy activity -- "communicating their thoughts for an adult to write".  This meets Developmental Indicator LDC-13d from the North Carolina Foundations for Early Learning and Development.  3 Year Old Classroom Literacy Activity
