  • 1.  Happy Halloween are you ready (and excited) for the Winter Holidays?

I still find myself pulling out the Louise and Julia's book Anti-Bias Education for Young Children and Ourselves, especially between October and December. Look at the chapter, "Learning About Holidays & Fairness." There is a little snippet on the NAEYC page and I think you can check it out at the library.

Be safe and have fun today.

Halloween is to me a very special holiday and one on which we should model our lives.

    (Explanation to follow...:P)

It's the day where we dress up as whoever we want to be: a princess, a scientist, a monster, a dragon...

Provided that thing we dress up as does not do harm to others (i.e. an evil clown or Scream)...why should there be only one day a year when we dress up as who we want and live our dreams? Shouldn't we each and every day be who we want to be?

Thank you for sharing the NAEYC link and how anti-bias plays into Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

A great resource for Thanksgiving, published by The National Museum of the American Indian, part of the Smithsonian Institution, is a short 3 1/2 page article entitled: 'Harvest Ceremony: Beyond the Thanksgiving Myth - a study guide'
     https://americanindian.si.edu/sites/1/files/pdf/education/NMAI_Harvest_Study_Guide.pdf

There are also other resources on their site, including 'American Indian Perspectives on Thanksgiving'
    https://americanindian.si.edu/sites/1/files/pdf/education/thanksgiving_poster.pdf
This is a 10 page article geared toward grades 4 through 8.

Even though the planning ideas in both articles are geared toward grade school age children, all Early Childhood teachers are likely to learn something new & informative which can be shared with all age.

    Thanks, Tori
